Welcome to a taste of history!

Denver’s original steakhouse, The Buckhorn Exchange is located in the city’s oldest neighborhood, just 5-minutes from downtown Denver -- with a light-rail stop right across the street. This National Historic Landmark and Western Museum has been serving the finest in Old West fare since 1893.

Prime grade beef steaks, buffalo prime rib, elk, salmon, quail, game hen, and succulent baby-back pork ribs are just some of the marvelous offerings on the Buckhorn menu. Exotic appetizers such as alligator tail and buffalo sausage are available, and no dinner is complete without the house specialty, Rocky Mountain Oysters.

For lunch we serve up a lighter fare including our renowned Grandma Fanny’s pot roast sandwich, enormous beef and buffalo burgers and more!

Buckhorn Exchange is a Denver gem, steeped in history with a unique, "museum-like" atmosphere. Visitors rave about the "amazing food," particularly the buffalo and elk dishes, and the "fabulous service." While some find it "pricey," the experience of dining in such a storied location is deemed "worth every dime."

Had an early dinner in the lower level seating area in the super comfy chairs. This history and setting in the dining area are very unique and help to justify the somewhat high price of the meals. Our server Nadia was very helpful in describing the different options on the menu. Despite the number of lukewarm reviews for the buffalo prime rib, I decided to order that and I was glad I did. I got it 12 oz cut cooked medium rare with the peppercorn crust and it was "to die for" good in taste, doneness, texture, etc. My friend got the elk and buffalo tenderloin and while it was also good, we both agreed the prime rib was better. The Dutch apple pie with ice cream made a great finish to the meal. Out the door cost for two meals and the shared dessert without any alcohol was just south of $210 including the tip, and I left feeling it was worth it.

Food was very so-so. The quail was like a rubber hockey puck dropped on plate. The sauce it lay in was an overly sugary waste. The poor bird was extraordinarily chewy, close to rubbery. The brownie dessert was an overly rich, mass of messy chocolate ladled over min-marshmallows. It was nothing more than a caloric overload. It was richer than a pile of melted Hershey bars and dark chocolate. It was a bit of a prepared mess. There was nothing interesting about the elk preparation. It was just a small piece of broiled elk. OK. So, food overall was a very weak part of the visit. The wait staff were excellent. And the historic atmosphere is a treat but I brought my partner for dinner and dinner was nothing special.

What a great experience, as this was our first time eating at Buckhorn. We’ll definitely comeback next time we visit Denver. Food was great and the apple pie dessert is amazing. Our waitress was good not great, and lacked people skills. She discredited a lot of items on the menu. Overall it’s a wonderful experience and food is really good.

While this place could easily be a tourist trap, it doesn’t behave like that. It’s not fine dining, but on the whole the food is very solid and the drinks were quite good. Our server Nicole was friendly and attentive and could not have been kinder. We recommend the big steak which was excellent as was the Buckhorn Old Fashioned. The Caesar salad was adequate but not worth the up charge. Desserts were appropriately decadent and after the big steak, one would certainly have sufficed. The turtle cheesecake would have been our choice to share though we also ordered the chocolate cake which was also delicious but far too rich.

We were so disappointed. He had the Ribeye special and I had NY strip. My steak had no flavor even when I paid extra for the peppercorn crust. A really good steak doesn’t require a condiment but this one desperately did(will say the sauce she gave me for the steak was good but didn’t hide the fact that the steak it self was flavorless and honestly the quality wasn’t great). I only ate half I just couldn’t eat anymore of it. My husband ribeye was full of fat and he asked for medium but came out medium rare. We never mind paying top $ for good food our meals weren’t even worth half the price they charged. The desert was very good apple pie.

I travel to Denver frequently and usually try to bring people that haven’t been to Buckhorn for the experience. Formerly it was for great food and the ambience. The food was mediocre. Our party had elk, Buffalo, game hen, salmon and an alligator appetizer. Nobody was dissatisfied, but nobody was raving about their meal either. The drinks were good and came out fairly quickly. The food came very very quickly as well. We were rushed out after being there an hour and 20 minutes after our reservation time which I thought was poor form. I will think twice and explore options for the next guests I entertain. Very sad because I love the history of the Buckhorn.
