Thomas Makris, from the Island of Skopelos, fell in love when he met Helen Babalos. They met at Orestes Greek restaurant in 1974, while on a Greek dancing tour of North America. Soon after their marriage, they had a vision to open a place like no other in Vancouver; a Greek restaurant where everyone is family; where everyone receives a consistent experience created by delicious homemade authentic food and impeccable service. In 1984 they opened Anatoli Souvlaki in north Vancouver. This is one of the best Greek restaurants in town. A bit pricy, but it has comfortable booth seating and authentic food at a much higher level than the usual overdone kebabs & rice platters. The grilled octopus was tender; lamb shoulder had a delicious sauce. We were expecting greens on the side, but we now know that you have to order them separately. They were unfortunately out of retsina (wahh!), so we tried two other wines, which were drinkable but weren't particularly great. The music started out (and occasionally returned to) a very un-Greek soft rock more befitting to a Robson Street chain store, but as the evening wore on, it became more sophisticated soundtrack, and mercifully at a low enough volume to allow easy table conversation. All in all, not perfect but well above average and worth your night out.
