"The Cygnet at The Swan" is an award winning restaurant led by Paul Welburn (previously awarded Michelin star at The Oxford Kitchen 2018). We are open from Wednesday to Saturday, bookings are encouraged but not necessary. The Fishes is a hidden gem. Quite a big gem, too. An imposing Victorian building set in acres of wooded grounds leading down to the banks of Seacourt Stream. The deck that wraps around the conservatory offers a rare opportunity in land-locked Oxford to dine outside with an idyllic view. In recognition of this, the Fishes was named Al Fresco Dining Pub of the Year in 2006, as well winner of The Public Vote in Oxfordshire Restaurant awards 2012 making it one of the best restaurants in Oxford.

    We had the 3 course set lunch menu which was both innovative and of high quality. The chef Paul Welburn has never been afraid of experimenting, and often tries out dishes for the tasting menu on the set menu first. Therefore for an excellent price of £35 plus service the ingredients and cooking are first class, and usually new to the recipient. Our starter was ox cheek cake with a blackberry sauce, wonderfully tasty and the densely packed meat was plentiful even if the volume looked small. The monkfish main was delightfully cooked in a tasty prawn and potato chowder with smoked leeks and sea beets. The dessert a refreshing lemon infused soft meringue with honey and whiskey. We will miss the chef when he moves to Cornwall in March but understand his sous chef of 14 years is taking over.
