Mushrooms are the heart of what we do at the Joel Palmer House. We have always endeavored to obtain seasonal and local ingredients and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables, some of which come from our own culinary garden. We are frequently inspired by ingredients found in the cuisines of France, China, Thailand, Poland and India, so we call our cooking "freestyle." Our dishes pair well the celebrated wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Our extensive, Oregon-focused wine list has been awarded the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. Of special note, The Joel Palmer House ranks as one of Oregon's finest historic homes and is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Oregon Historic Register. Built in 1857, the house is Dayton's oldest standing structure. When weather permits, guests can enjoy their dinner on our outdoor patio, soaking in the last rays of sunshine in the heart of Oregon Wine Country.

This was our second time to dine at MEC; both times were excellent. The food is meant for sharing, so plates appear at the table when cooked, meaning that they aren't served together or in the order you expected. Our carrots (wonderful) were served well after other dishes had been consumed. This may be a turn-off for some. However, each plate was terrific, so the sequencing didn't matter to us. Also, the noise level is very high; probably not suitable for anyone with hearing difficulties or wanting an intimate conversation. On the other hand, it is obviously a "happening" place, so is fun if you don't mind a loud ambiance. My wife and I enjoy the diversity of plates at MEC, as well as the activity. Others may prefer more traditional servings and conversational environment.

We had breakfast/brunch. It was such a nice experience. Our server was Whitney, and she did an excellent job making sure we knew what the featured items were, tending to our table and just being really personable. We tried the French toast bites- oh my! Those are a new favorite. We shared the steak/potatoes/eggs meal, and the crab benedict. The steak was cooked just right, and there was plentiful, delicious crab in the benedict. The crab really stood out as a highlight of our meal because it was so fresh-tasting and had a good bite to it. It was a nice ambiance, with a view of the foothills, and we left happy and content.

Twice a year some old friends from Chicago visit their son & his family in Portland, and we always meet halfway (I live in Newport) for lunch while they're in Oregon. Over the years we've gone to many of the fine vineyards & restaurants in the wine country but always gravitate back around to Dundee Bistro, not only for its fine cuisine but also for its stylish yet comfortable ambience, its seating options (we like to be outdoors in summer, by the fireplace in winter), and its attentive but never intrusive service.
