Thomas Makris, from the Island of Skopelos, fell in love when he met Helen Babalos. They met at Orestes Greek restaurant in 1974, while on a Greek dancing tour of North America. Soon after their marriage, they had a vision to open a place like no other in Vancouver; a Greek restaurant where everyone is family; where everyone receives a consistent experience created by delicious homemade authentic food and impeccable service. In 1984 they opened Anatoli Souvlaki in north Vancouver. In 2011 their sons Alexi and Iani took over the restaurant and early 2015 they expanded on their parents original dream, in a new venture with their cousin Daniel Bergman, Alexi and Iani opened ‘The Greek by Anatoli’ in Yaletown. ‘The Greek by Anatoli’ focuses on small share plates or “mezze”.

While his mother inspired our sister restaurant, Ophelia, the familial tradition has continued here at Monarca where you’ll find playful dishes and a lively atmosphere inspired by Chef Higareda’s father.Francisco’s father lived near the famous Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in central Mexico’s Michoacán region. We loved this restaurant! The service was impeccable, the ambiance perfect, and the food was good. While it was slightly on the expensive side, it was well within expectations and didn’t take away from the superb evening we had. Our young kids were mesmerised by the revolving night scenes and fascinated by the movement of the restaurant, which kept them entertained throughout the evening. We highly recommend this restaurant for a fun and memorable dining experience—whether you’re with family, friends, or on a romantic night out.

Open later on Christmas eve and was pleased to be able to make a reservation within 20 minutes of the time I started looking. Was seated 10 minutes earlier than my scheduled reservation time and once we placed our order the food was delivered quickly, despite being very busy in there. Overall great experience.
