Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails. All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Famous for their lamb chops, these were worth every penny. I haven’t had such good lamb since I left Chicago or visited Greece. My husband had the moussaka which was excellent. He had the lentil soup and I had the Greek salad both of which were really really good. The food was worth the cost. My only complaint was the noise. The back room was loud. We will return. I would consider buying the cookbook to get the recipe for those chops.

Dinner was as wonderful as ever (NOPA is a local favorite of ours), and as a nice touch even though we declined desserts as we had birthday cake waiting at home, they still brought us a delicious hazelnut & fennel cookie each with the check. Cocktails were delicious as well, and we were pleased to see that a variety of mocktails were available for those observing dry January. NOPA just keeps getting better!

Business dinner with my colleagues at China Live on the Chinese New Year was fantastic! We tried multiple dishes and everything was simply delicious. The Chilean sea bass was the best I have ever had. So were the pork dumplings and shrimp dumplings. We will definitely return when we are back in San Francisco again.

I’ll admit it was pretty difficult to get a reservation as they are booked quite a ways out. I’m so pleased I kept trying and got a spot on a Monday. So much attention to detail with the food and drinks! Absolutely delicious. The portions are quite generous. Flora, our server, was a delight. We will definitely be back!
