Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Hayes Street Grill consistently delights with its "fresh fresh fresh" seafood and "fabulous" service. Ideal for pre-performance dining, it offers a warm, professional atmosphere. While some dishes are simple, the "best French fries in SF" and expertly cooked fish keep patrons returning. Located near cultural venues, it's a "San Francisco treasure."

We were happy with the service, and family members liked the sole and the pork chop and were less impressed with fried oysters and White Sea bass dishes.

Service was nonexistent. Food was good. Came on Xmas eve. After ordering food server actively avoided our table. Went over 30 minutes without anything to drink, water finally came at the last 10 minutes of the meal. Spoke with “manager” who dismissed issues. As someone who lives in SF I am shocked and disappointed in the service and sad I am unable to ever recommend nor want to come back. Whoever the chef is, is doing a great job. Unfortunately after a $300 meal a sour taste is left in my mouth based off the very poor “service”.

We booked a table for 3 pm, so it was quiet. Only one other couple in the restaurant. They say our party of 5 cramped in the corner next to the other couple where I couldn’t even pull my chair out . The food was ok. I asked for my fish well done and it was undercooked. They were accommodating and cooked it more. The salads were great, the sea bass and pork chop were good. I think I was unlucky with the cod. Overall not a great experience.

Petrale sole with thinly shaved trumpet mushrooms was perfect. Paired with a Sancerre. Heavenly.

This place is not the same as it used to be. The martinis were not cold. We asked for fries to be delivered first with our drinks and they came out last. Raw oysters were very good and for $25 per 1/2 dozen they better be. Entrees were fine, but not up to the price. Our server seemed rushed, but was not keeping an eye on things.

I had not eaten at the Hayes Street Grill for a few decades, but had wanted to eat there again for some time so I invited a friend to eat with me. He didn't take advantage of the seafood offerings but I did and was extremely pleased. We both chose fairly simple entrees but enjoyed them very much. Service was cheerful, prompt and attentive and the food came quickly. I plan to eat there again soon.
