A timeless, sought-after dining escape, celebrated Chef Brian Malarkey opened Herb & Wood to instant acclaim over four years ago. In that time, the restaurant has become an icon, a dining destination that has helped to propel San Diego's culinary reputation to new heights. By focusing on rustic, wood-fired dishes, Chef Malarkey's menu elevates humble ingredients such as carrots, beets, and chicken, incorporating Mediterranean flavors and a California ethos of seasonality and sustainability.

From the OpenTable editors: Spectacular wood-fired mains and a strong cocktail game are the twin draws at this sceney Cali-Mediterranean restaurant. Owner and Top Chef finalist Brian Malarkey created a place that’s just as charismatic as his on-air persona, complete with candlelit tables, barrel-vaulted ceilings, and modern art on the walls.

Matty made us feel so welcome and un-rushed. There were four of us sharing appetizers, sides, and entrees, and the dishes were all presented in a way that was perfect for sharing. It was an excellent birthday celebration for my husband.

I’m not sure how you guys managed it but it was an impressive feat that your wagyu AND gnocchi were as tough as leather to chew through, but you did it! First of all, it’s a shame when a restaurant is pushing their Australian wagyu only to over cook it and place it under the heat lamp while they prepare the rest of your meal. Maybe it was the low quality cut or the preparation but I’ve never had to chew wagyu more than a couple times before it’s safe to swallow. I was actually afraid cause the meat was quite literally fighting me back as I tried to consume it. If this was a ploy to get me to eat less meat … it almost worked! Secondly, how does one make gnocchi so dense? Every bite I took was like biting into a stale circus peanut candy from back in the day (look it up, they were horrendous) and let’s not forget to talk about the oxtail part of the dish. I think there actually has to be meat in the sauce to call it gnocchi with oxtail. I know prices have gone up for oxtails but you already charge hefty prices for that exact reason. So I ask that you reevaluate the ratio of meat to your gnocchi for next time. Overall, food was unimpressive. Drinks were fantastic. Service great. Ambience dark and brooding. Noise level medium. It’s a fun place to bring visiting guests but stay away from the faux wagyu, because not only will it hurt your wallet but it’ll hurt your teeth as well.

The restaurant is nice BUT prices very high for the quality and size of the dishes. Very slow service of the food, the appetizers and the drinks came without delay. Gin basil very pretentious and expensive, tasted like lemonade with alcohol. The second half took so long that we had to ask twice to the waiters if they were ever going to arrive. The manager arrived, a very smug young guy with a mustache who has no idea how to deal with 50 year old customers who have visited many restaurants countless times. His response about the delay was in a haughty and rude tone of voice, he wanted us to believe that the delay was for our benefit so that we would not feel pressured to leave early. He didn't even apologize. He even came in shouting that we only had 17 minutes to wait between the 1st half and the second half!!! He simply gave no room to acknowledge that they had poor and slow service. We were so impressed of his attitude and rudeness, could not believe his answer!! In his place I would have apologized and made my costumbre feel appreciated by sending a complimentary dessert or any other treat. The waitress with a similar attitude, forgot half of the things we asked her, the wine, the chili flakes. We asked her if she was going to bring any bread, she said it had a cost and it will take 6 minutes to bake. If you are not offering bread at least she should have told us that information before having our meal so we could have ordered it on time!! Valet parking only has service until 9:30 and the manager claimed it was until 10. He has no idea of the hours of the services offered by the restaurant. We will never come back for sure.

Our first time here was a pleasure. Very cool place, open and spacious with fabulously attractive and attentive staff. We chose Branzino that was wrapped in crispy speck ham with olive tapenade - simply delicious especially with the white Spanish Grenache! We also had the papadelle with mussels in a creamy sauce, again delicious…

While we enjoyed the ambiance at Herb & Wood, the food lacked a bit of taste last night. We each enjoyed a cocktail before dinner. My friend had one of their pizzas as her meal and the crust was nearly raw. She pulled the toppings off and ate them and left all of the doughy, raw crust. Her husband had the swordfish and he said it was very good. Both my husband and I ordered the Iberico pork dish that was to have apple mostarda on it but neither of us could taste any flavor of apple at all. The plate was full of cannellini beans and strips of pork but really needed that apple mostarda to balance the flavors. It turned out to be a bland and disappointing dish. The dessert menu was very small and there was really nothing that sounded very good so we passed on dessert. Our bill was still over $300 for four people! Not sure we will return to Herb & Wood after that experience!

Fabulous tapas, fully accommodating to my celiac (which is such a treat in itself), all of our meals were delicious and the wines were also really nice. Service was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. We’ll be making this a go-to for dinners out DT. Thank you 🙏🏽 🌸

The cauliflower dish was my favorite, followed by the carrot dish. The swordfish was a bit dry and the king trumpet mushrooms were a bit tough. Overall, we liked the vibe of the place but it was a little too dark for our tastes. The waiter was lovely. We would come back.
