Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

i had such a delicious meal at kokkari. Amazing service, amazing ambiance, amazing food. Do NOT skip the octopus or spanakopita. Both were so delicious. Everything we had was absolutely fab! I only wish i lived in sf so i could come back again soon.

I’ve been here many times, but yesterday the food were not good as usual. We had lamb tongue, citrus salad and grilled octopus as starters. Only citrus salad was bitter and lack of honey dressing. I used to had citrus salad here, so I know what to expect. Main courses were goat stew and lamb chops. Lamb chops were perfectly cooked; however, there were small bones here and there. The goat stew dish were not as good as I used to had every time I cam here. It was a bit lack of seasoning. In contrast, meat was perfectly cooked, very tender. Service was not as good as usual. The waiter was too tired or lazy to tell us the details of special dishes of the day as they used to do.

Haven’t been here in years, prices have really soared. Quality still excellent and the staff, service is also great. Very knowledgeable about the old world wines and good selection too. Pita, feta olives to start with a bottle of retsina, followed by the delicious smelt (much smaller portion these days). Hortiki salad, grilled petrale sole, grilled sea bream, goat with artichoke and cheese and the rack of lamb (now $69 for 3), all the entree were exceptional but was just surprised how expensive it has gotten, not to mention the healthcare tax also added to the bill. Special occasions only from now on.
