Recommended in the MICHELIN Guide for California 2021-2023. Located in Oakland’s historic Grand Lake District, Bardo is a neighborhood lounge and restaurant inspired by the comfort and camaraderie of a mid-century dinner party. Drawing on the celebration and elegance of old school entertaining, we envisioned a space for friends and neighbors to enjoy amazing food, cocktails, conversation and great music. Our lounge is a swank living room, furnished with hand-picked finds from antique and vintage markets from Palm Springs to Portland. Our mezzanine dining room features a rotating menu of fresh, seasonal supper-fare with local and sustainably sourced meats, fish and produce. While we think the food, drinks and atmosphere are all great reasons to visit us, it’s the relationships with our friends, neighbors and guests that is the driving force behind Bardo.

After their first 2 restaurants, Pastoral in Berkeley (first opened in 1982 while still students, 37 in the architecture program at Cal and San-Ju painting at SFAI) then later Soizic (Jack London Square, 1996), they wanted to shift gears from heavily curated menus to more comfort-based fare catering more to the eclectic and artistic community in Oakland. Today you’ll find people of all ages and backgrounds, from Too Short to Jerry Brown.

Super fun upscale but homey soul food. Recommend the chicken liver and waffles and corn bread. The beet salad with a rich creamy dressing was both light with amazing herbs and hearty. We had excellent recommendations for wine along with dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the retro ambiance and dishes too. My partner said one of the plates they served food on was what their parents had when they were a kid!

Wonderful experience and delicious each and every plate. I can’t wait to go back even just to sit at the bar for a cocktail and some duck rolls! It’s been a while since covid to experience a restaurant where the staff genuinely cares and provides top-notch dining service even though we had 2 kids with us for our special Pre-Thanksgiving occasion.

We’re so glad to have Mago as our annual tradition! This seven course feast was amazing in way more than seven ways. And while the dishes all honored traditional Thanksgiving preparations, they also each featured the Mago chefs’ innovative and original twists, making for a truly memorable meal. With plenty of leftovers! 1: The turkey was prepared two different ways, dividing the white breast meat (brined and roasted) from the dark meat (cured and slow-cooked leg thigh and wing). Both preparations were moist, tender and flavorful. 2: The gravy was as it should be: silky smooth and rich with giblet flavor, but built to compliment the amazing turkey and whipped taters, not overpower them. 3: Including kumquats in the cranberry sauce gave it that extra fruity-tart oomph that set it apart from even the best handmade cranberry sauces. 4: The use of pear in the roasted fall veggies raised my eyebrows in skepticism at first, and then delight at the flavor combination. Sunchokes are also not something we are used to eating, and they were part mushroomy and part artichokey….yum! 5: Adding Maitakes to the cornbread gave it a very subtle savory note, counterbalanced nicely with the holiday-spiced, honey-sweetened butter. 6. The Chicory Salad was SUPER fresh, and I didn't think the addition of celery into the mix with persimmon would work, but sure enough, along with the cilantro-joghurt dressing, everything came together in perfect balance of crunch, sweet and creamy 7. Finally, the 9” round of Guava Cheesecake can only be described as a super decadent tropical fruit flavor bomb! Incredible, and the quantity included would easily serve 8 after such a feast.

Had an extraordinary dining experience with their 10-course meal with their fabulous wine pairing. I really appreciated the wines chosen so thoughtfully that enhanced and complimented the flavors of each dish and was happy to discover some wonderful international wines. Truly a once in a lifetime luxurious experience. Thank you Commis for making my 60th birthday celebration so memorable and special.
