Market Place Tavern is the latest concept and restaurant for Market Hospitality Group (MHG). The Tavern which overlooks the Litchfield Green, is the oldest public building in town and one of the oldest penal facilities in the state. It was built in 1812 to serve as a jail for British prisoners during the War of 1812. A cell block and a three-story wing with additional cell blocks, which now is part of the restaurant’s bar area, was added in 1846. The jail closed in 1992 and was used as a treatment center for men serving prison sentences. It shut down again in 1993 and reopened in 1994 as a rehabilitation center for women facing incarceration. When that center closed, the state decided to sell it.The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features “American Tavern Food” with Craft Beers and Cocktails made with local spirits. We had a fantastic experience from the moment we arrived. The online reservation process was seamless and we were seated promptly upon arrival. The restaurant's warm, cozy, and inviting atmosphere was beautifully decorated. Our waitress was extremely helpful, attentive, and offered excellent suggestions. The food was outstanding and the drinks were exceptional! We can't wait to return for another visit. This hidden gem is definitely worth stopping by.

W O W This place chefs! Truly amazing food and service. The balance in their flavor profiles is a wonder to taste. The duck was the most insanely gorgeous thing I have ever eaten till now. The agnolotti was incredible. Our lamb belly starter was the most tender & delicious! Love the beautiful tasty cocktails( Old Fashioned and Nog). The service is 10 stars & I feel truly honored to have been able to score a reservation on my birthday.

Delicious meal with really wonderful service! We did find it odd that you can’t enter the building from the street, you must walk down a dark driveway and enter from the parking lot in rear. It was moderately decorated for the holidays, when that’s removed I get the sense the restaurant would lack a bit in ambiance.
