Sambuca is not the classiest of drinks, to say the least, more associated with a night on the tartan tiles than an elegant Edinburgh eatery, but at Sambuca Restaurant in Newington, they manage to strike a balance between the two. They offer superb Italian cuisine served up in a boisterous, family-run environment down on Causewayside, and when you head on over, you’re guaranteed a friendly welcome. Start with their antipasti – fresh mussels, proscuitto and melon or some cold-cured meats – and then move onto a main. There are plenty of pastas and pizzas, of course, but we’d go straight for their house specials menu which here at Sambuca means seafood: trout with lemon, sole in butter, prawns in tamarind and more. Take a trip to Causewayside in Edinburgh’s Newington for a great Italian meal: just remember to book your table ahead of time.

Edinburghs The ivy:19/12/24 The waitress and the waiter were really nice the food sounds good and some... Interesting. Its kind of noisy. The drinks: The drinks were really nice my mother says it's really nice she also says it is fruity and goes down easily. The looks: It looks really nice there's candle's in the middle of each table the view has to much construction though there's lamps in the middle of each window to the paintings in the back are... Kind of nice actually there's a leaf in a corner of the room which I like The starter: The smoke salmon was amazing and wonderful especially with the lemon best smoke smalon ever. The foods time to come. Its taken a long time. The main course: The fish was exquisite one of a kind and the chips were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING WAY BETTER THAN THE SMOKE SALMON WHICH I THOUGHT WAS THE BEST the mushy peas were... Weird and the ribeye steak was good but burgers are still better. The dessert: Since it was my sister's birthday I got a FREE dessert and it's part of a birthday cake AND trust me IT'S TO DIE FOR!!! The bill: The bill is way less than I thought just 231!?!? THAT'S A BARGAIN ESPECIALLY FOR HOW MUCH WE GOT! The rating: The final rating is... 4.5 stars🌟⭐🌟⭐ Review by Ollie Smith

We had a very enjoyable pre-theatre dinner at Southpour. The service was very good, and the menu offered something for everyone. If we’d known how generous the portions were, we probably wouldn’t have ordered starters and mains, and there was certainly no room for pudding. Overall, a very good experience.

We started off the night with drinks and canapes in the red velvet lounge before transitioning into the lovely, airy dining room. The food was so fresh and flavorful. The Aubergine and Endive were particular hits as they had really lovely textures and a range of flavors to complement the main items. The cod was luscious and spare, and the venison was delightful with its pickled radicchio, marinated bell peppers, red wine jus, and green peppercorns. Dessert was a pair of lovely dishes - one with chocolate, blackberry granita and buckwheat and finally a lovely, savory honey cookie bar with a douglas fir dusting. The wine list was quite affordable and we had a lovely Viognier with our first couple courses. Great spot, beautiful vibes and great food. What a lovely place to kick off a trip to Scotland!
