On May 13, 1931, Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry's Bar in Venice. Over the years, Harry's Bar has become the place where writers, painters, artists, aristocrats, kings, and queens would meet. Among them were: Barbara Hutton, Katherine Hepburn, Gary Cooper, Giancarlo Menotti, Peggy Guggenheim, Orson Welles, Frank Lloyd Wright, Joe DiMaggio, Truman Capote, and Ernest Hemingway. The keys to the success of this small bar were: service, freedom, and lack of imposition.Throughout its 93-year history, Harry's Bar has witnessed the 20th century in Venice. Its importance was also recognized by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, which declared it a national reference point in 2001. Given the rave reviews, I probably expected too much. The food was fine. Not amazing. The polenta was runny. Prosciutto and burrata were good. Truffle pasta was good but expensive. The bill was high relative to enjoyment. Service was great. It’s a fine option but you have so many equally good options that are a tad less.

Interesting decorations where thousands of Aperol bottles on the selves give a warm orange hue in the restaurant. Staff courteous and professional. Excellent food. The Fegato (liver) alla Veneziana just as it should be. Tables a bit crowded Entrance door right next to some tables was left open be incoming/outcoming customers and an icy draft was present. Overall a memorable Christmas Eve dinner.
