We have dined at Madison's numerous times, and this one wasn't as stellar an experience. The service was outstanding; however, the food was not as notable as previous times. My husband and son enjoyed their Caesar salads. I had the candied pumpkin and arugula salad. This was lush and full of flavors and textures. The Iberico ham with the candied pumpkin was heavenly and the whipped ricotta added a wonderful creamy airiness. The duck breast was my husband's choice as an entree. The duck was perfectly cooked and he enjoyed the flavors and textures (whipped mashed sweet potato as well as sweet potato chips) that accompanied it. He noted that the roasted Brussels sprouts needed to be cooked more. Our son and I each had the trout and both of us found the fish to be on the dry side and the portion small. The real star of the dish was the orzo with brown butter and white wine caper cream. Both of us commented that a bowl of the orzo would be delightful on/with anything. While both of us are huge fans of mushrooms, this entree had oyster mushrooms which had an unusual bitterness that spoiled an otherwise delicious side. We shared two desserts - banana pudding and the dark chocolate creme brulee. The banana pudding was everything you would hope it to be - rich banana flavor, vanilla wafers, whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel. A lovely sweet ending. The dark chocolate creme brulee was beautifully presented (whipped cream and fresh berries on top), but would benefit being in a traditional ramiken so there was more area for that glorious burned sugar topping. The actual creme portion was surprisingly light and airy, but lacked good chocolate flavor. It needed something to boost the chocolate-ness - chocolate or coffee liqueur? Espresso? Just something to amp it up. We went on a Sunday evening at 6:30, and there were not many tables filled; however, we were in a small room and all three booths in a row were seated. Staff could have spread guests out more/

Beautiful setting in a historic inn. Excellent service. The pimento cheese and homemade butter crackers were divine.

We have been coming here for 18 years and it is not what is once was. Service was slow and the food was fair at best.
