34 is Chef Emeril Lagasse’s first restaurant dedicated to the cuisine of his Portuguese heritage. He was inspired by his late mother, Hilda, who influenced his interest in cooking when he was a child growing up in Fall River, MA. The 245-seat restaurant is adorned in shades of green – Emeril’s signature color – wood accents and ornate Portuguese tiles. A painting of a rooster, a national Portuguese symbol of good luck, greets guests at the entrance. Once inside, a jamon bar with countertop service and tile-clad DJ booth are focal points of the space. The restaurant celebrates not only the food and design of Portugal but also the sounds, with music from local and touring DJs.

Only place I know about in the city to get authentic Portuguese food! And it did not disappoint. From the architecture to the house mix dj, the mood rides the line of intimacy to classy city club. The service was a bit chaotic and unconventional, but we were compensated with sparkling wine, a great description of our options and quick service after orders were placed. The encouraged “share your foods” style was right up our date night alley. All we say is we’ll be back and try the paella!

The place is new so we cut it some slack. The server was a little uninformed about the menu and what some of the actual words meant. When asked to describe some of the menu items (tinned muscles and caldo verde) she replied she honestly did not know much about them. OK, fine, we are adventurous. We started with the tinned seasoned mucles on bread. The bread was excellent as were the muscles but they gave only 3 slices of bread with big holes in it, so not enough bread. We asked for more and got 3 more pieces and were disappointed to see were charged $2 extra for it. The Pao Con Tomato was good but really could have used some Maldon salt on the tomato coulis to make the flavors pop, the Jamon Iberico was not salty enough to do this. The Spanish Paella was a bit soggy on the bottom which was disappointing since we were told it would be a crunchy however the flavors were amazing, the shrimp were done perfectly and the rabbit sausage was excellent. We also had the piri piri chicken which was delightful and juicy and it came with some excellent thick cut double fried potatoes and extra piri piri sauce. For dessert we chose a scoop of three different ice creams/sorbets. They gave us the wrong ice creams and comped us our 2 missing flavors. We loved the ambiance and cocktails and we do recommend the Branca Sangria. We will be back to try more things and we trust 34 Bar and restaurant to have the kinks worked by then.

Very elegant place, very good service but food was not what I expected for a traditional Portuguese restaurant. Only one cod dish in the menu and it was extremely salty. We ordered a Piri piri chicken and got the meat dish instead. I decided not to ask to change cause it was NYE and it could take long.
