Disappointed. Saturday afternoon. This hotel is very local for us in a lovely village having visited here several times previously we booked again for afternoon tea & planned to have drinks after in the bar area. On arrival we did comment that there were no customers in the bar area which normally is very busy and has a good atmosphere. We were greeted by a lovely lady who asked if we were here for afternoon tea, she advised that the restaurant was closed for refurbishment so we were taken to the smaller function room behind the bar , we walked in to a room which was full of tables & chairs and nothing else it had bare walls, no furnishings with no atmosphere or other customers, we presumed it was also getting prepared for refurbishment, it was very uninviting. I think they were using it as a breakfast room for hotel guests as outside there were tables prepared for juice tea/coffee etc. As we were the only customers in the bar and restaurant area the staff were attentive and kept checking on us. The afternoon tea was as expected with plenty of refills of hot tea. The food was served on small dark wooden upcycled shelving units normally used for trinkets or it could have been an old drawer with compartments with the drawer handle used to carry it to the table. Not the most hygienic. In the past a traditional 3 tier cake stand had been used which is a far better way to present an afternoon tea. As we are very good friends we chatted away as usual & enjoyed each others company. When we had finished around 6.00pm the bar area was only partly lit with no customers so we decided to leave. In the past we have enjoyed a few hours in the bar. We were advised the reason for no customers was due to a general industry decline. There has definitely been a missed opportunity to attract the local community to this historic hotel in prime position in a popular village where the population is still increasing. We would not return again.

Food was dreadful. Worst afternoon tea I've had. None of the savories were warm and the scones were that hard I could have built a wall with them, I couldn't get my knife through them.

The lady serving us was lovely, so helpful. The sandwiches were quite dry, felt as though they had been made and left out some Time. The restaurant was empty when we were there, u thionyl the tea would have been better served on the bar.

Fantastic food and great service. Excellent value for money. Plenty of food and we were given boxes at the end to take home the bits we couldn’t manage to eat. We had a wonderful time and the lady serving us was so helpful. Thank you for a fantastic afternoon tea.

Only one waitress serving afternoon tea and working the bar. She was run off her feet. Had to keep asking for re fill of tea, and no cream or jam served for the scones. They asked when booking if I had any special requests. I asked for a 65th balloon for the table as we were celebrating my aunts birthday. No balloon was put out.

Lovely food and great service but lacked ambience. Not the staffs fault. We were one of two couples in the dining room. Great value tho and the sausage rolls and scones were delicious.

There is no denying that the Afternoon Tea was good value for money. There seemed to be only one lady working and she was busy, but attentive throughout. The let down was the coffee - it was instant and had no taste at all. A shame when the tea was Yorkshire Tea. Although we managed to swap our sandwiches between us, we didn't get any choice in filling, it was set, so this is something to keep in mind if you are not a fan of Ham & Mustard, Salmon & Cream Cheese, Cheese or Egg. The sausage rolls were lovely, but the goats cheese tart was awful to be honest, it had runny cheese, no flavour and we couldn't recall the additional filling but it seemed to be fig maybe, or something of that nature. For such a small tart, there was no flavour at all. We had endless opportunities for more tea and coffee, so no complaints there and when we asked for tap water we got a bottle of it so that too was good. All the desserts were lovely, no complaints there at all. The room we were in wasn't busy, only three tables occupied and we were one of them. I would say it's a little dated with chairs that are a little creaky, but overall it was clean and as one of the tables had a large family with children, the lady who was doing everything, moved us from our original table when originally seating us, to give us a little space (and ensuring it was a little quieter too) - this was a nice touch and considerate. At then end it was odd, everyone had disappeared and we had no clue where to pay etc. but we went to the bar and paid there. Personally I wouldn't rush back, but it is definitely worth a try to see for yourself and as mentioned at the beginning, definitely value for money in terms of cost.

The afternoon tea was not the best but it was ok but the atmosphere in the bar was great so we stayed a few hours just having a drink.

Lovely Afternoon Tea served on a wooden stand which was a different take on the traditional way but very nicely done!! Overall really great value for money and once we had finished eating we took our tea into the old hall and enjoyed just relaxing in the lovely old room!!
