Executive chef: Ralph Pausina

From the OpenTable editors: Antoine’s is the county’s oldest continuously operating restaurant and a special-occasion destination for its opulent setting and elegant, French-Creole fare. Sit in one of 14 gilded dining rooms to feast on favorites like oyster Rockefeller and soufflé potatoes, both original to the restaurant. Cap the meal with a classic baked Alaska or the house chicory coffee, laced with cognac and triple sec and flamed tableside—it’s New Orleans, after all.

While our food was good, we felt the service was really off. Our waiter was inattentive, didn’t describe the entrees properly, and never asked to refresh our drinks. After my lamb chops arrived, I waited about 5 minutes to get a waiter’s attention to bring me a steak knife. I couldn’t - so I got up from the table and searched for someone who could get me a steak knife. We cancelled our dessert order of the baked Alaska, even though the waiter offered to comp it, as we had had enough already. Too many other excellent restaurants in the French Quarter.

It's a New Orleans treasure so you have to go once. We were so lucky to see at the front window and watch the world go by. The food is good, and the service is fabulous. Darla and Daniel waited on us beautifully! Make sure to wander around the restaurant to look at the Mardi Gras memorabilia. Ask to take a peek through the cellar door—it's half a football field long!

As a native New Orleanian, I am very familiar where Antoine's fits into the pantheon of great Creole restaurants. It no longer qualifies for the average dinner. Perhaps the carnival krewes fair better? My wife and I dined in the large annex on a Saturday night. Our waiters were new and inexperienced but tried hard to make a bad meal better. The vast menu has been cut even further from the massive cuts post Katrina. The dress code has been relaxed and largely abandoned. The famous oysters Rockefeller were ruined by poor shucking. The oysters were still attached to the shell in many places. The dish was warm not hot. The equally famous tournedos avec Marchand du Vin sauce has been replaced by a tough file with little sauce. The sauce was OK but not as it should be. I asked for brabant potatoes rather than the mashed potatoes offered with the filet'. What I got was french fries chopped into cubes. Nothing in the dish save the fact it was potatoes, resembled brabant potatoes. I was given a small container of butter, garlic and parsley so that I might dip my cubes of potatoes into the mix after explaining to the waiter what the dished was supposed to be. My wife was told the crab cakes were made of jumbo lump crab meat. They were not. The wine list did not have the wine I requested. The list of after-dinner cordials (also called digestifs) did not have what I requested but a substitute were provided. The deserts were provided gratis . A demi tasse of coffee was not available. The final bills was just over $500.00 and was largely as waste of money. I will not return.

With such a reputation, I would have expected the food to be better. Escargot was too salty, the oysters Rockefeller did not seem to have fresh spinach and the spinach was overcooked, the bisque and crab meat soups were good, the entrees Red Fish Almoldine was fried and the Pompano was mediocre. We will not go back.
