Asador Bastian is a Chicago chophouse with Basque influences from acclaimed Chef
Doug Psaltis. Located in the iconic “Flair House” originally built in 1883, this historic
townhouse has been revived and brought back to life with culinary inspiration from the
great asadors of San Sebastián, Spain to serve the world’s best boutique beef without
compromise. The most remarkable dining experience comes from the purest ingredients
delivered in the supremely thoughtful, welcoming and hospitable manner. This ethos
has directed every aspect of the experience at Asador Bastian, whether you’re joining
us for small bites and libations in our Bar Room or for a more intimate experience in our
Dining Room.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: In a historic River North townhouse, you’ll find Asador Bastion, named one of 2023’s best new restaurants by Esquire. Acclaimed wife-and-husband team Hsing Chen and Doug Psaltis lead the kitchen, which turns out Basque-inspired feasts starring impressive steaks cooked over a live-fire grill alongside caviar churros and arroz cremoso. It’s all served in an opulent dining room decked with olive green leather banquettes and vintage Murano glass chandeliers.

Very disappointing valentines dinner here. Pre-fix menu with extremely small portions. Other than presentation, the food was very underwhelming.

Chicago Restaurant Week at Asador Bastian. The restaurant is located on Erie Street at the old Flair Coach House. The main dining room is on the second floor and a bar and bar tables at the street level. Comfortable seats, very good and attentive service, the food was great with a well curated wine program.

Pretty good but didn’t live up to the hype. What was really disappointing was that I ordered an app that they failed to bring and I ordered the wine pairing and they failed to bring one of the wines. When I pointed this out they just brushed it off acting like it was no big deal and they were doing me a favor to bring the items at all. Bavettes is better value, food and service.

Review: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5) I had high expectations coming into Asador Bastian, given its ranking as the 14th best steakhouse in the world, and overall, it delivered a great experience. The food was excellent—flavors were spot on, and the quality was undeniable. My steak, while flavorful, was slightly tougher than expected, which is why I’d rate it an 8.5/10. Service was generally good, though a bit inconsistent. My first bartender wasn’t as attentive as I would have liked, but the second more than made up for it—easily a 12/10 in terms of attentiveness and hospitality. At $250 for one person, it’s a premium experience, so I’m being a bit critical. That said, I’d absolutely come back and would recommend it to anyone looking for a top-tier steakhouse.

I had high hopes, but was woefully underwhelmed. I will go again for cocktails and appetizers, and am looking forward to improving my perception and replacing my first impression with better experiences. Scott, our server, was a seasoned pro. Scott made the meal fun even though the dishes were not impressive.

We were here for Restaurant Week 2025. It was equally amazing this time around. We ate here last May off the regular menu. The room is beautiful and service can't be beat! Worth the $$!
