An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

    We decided to do a meal of appetizers and all of them were delicious. Especially the mussels and clams. Also Michelle was a wonderful waiter, anticipating our needs and with good knowledge of the menu.

    Gave notice of late arrival so not to lose table. Only 15 minutes was granted. Made it in time. Then due to some confusion was asked to eat up and move on within 60 minutes. In checking, found that host was confused on our time limit (1hr 45 mins max) an waiters apologized. However, shortly thereafter we were asked again to eat up and leave. Apparently even though you arrive late, your time is docked. Made us feel very anxious as the bus boy, waiter, and manager all pressing a clean up even while we had full glasses of wine, dessert in play, coffee, etc. We were very unimpressed by the management control and unfortunately gave a minimal tip to the waiters due to establishment unfairness. Will never book a table again better to park at the bar and take your good old time !

    We had a wonder time celebrating my husband’s birthday. Our server took care of us and they gave us the perfect table to enjoy the music. Highly recommend. The bartender and hostess were amazing also!

    The service was excellent. We didn’t tell them it was my cousin’s husband’s birthday — I only wished it in passing b/c it had happened the week before. Our server had overheard and brought out a candle in his dessert which was such a nice touch. Thank you!

    My friend and I booked this meal to catch up and visit. Everything was great and when we were done eating someone who I assume was the manager came over to ask us how it was, and we said great. He came back about 10 minutes later and said out of nowhere, I'm going to have to ask you to leave. When I said why he said because we have a time limit. I said ok, can we have 5 minutes (my friend was mid story)? He said no you cannot, our limit is 1 hour 45 minutes and you have been here 2 hours and 15 minutes. So tacky for what used to be a great restaurant! No one wants to be kicked out after spending hundreds of dollars on a meal. We were quietly talking, not be loud or anything!
