Amazing venue. Food was overpriced for what you get. We ordered the sea food tower(200$) and it was -ok. Our steaks were fine-Texas roadhouse-y. Frankly, I wouldn’t be writing anything, and just passed it off as another vastly overpriced Hawaiian dinner if the service wasn’t so lack luster. Our waiter would have been very appropriate for an IHOP or something of that caliber, but not at a three hundred dollar a person place. Took our order, then didn’t see him again until the main entree was three fourths done. Other folks brought the apps, the entrees, filled the drinks, etc. he actually asked me, with two bites left how my entree was, and would I like a glass of wine to drink. He tried to make some small talk when the check was delivered, but I wasn’t having it. We noted that similar service in this section was given to the other patrons. I had to create this account in order to leave a review, as I have never done this before, but felt the experience should have been much better given the high marks the restaurant has received, and it does bother me to have to leave this. It bothered me to leave an eighty dollar tip for no service a bit more, however.

Canoe House has been one of our favorites on the Island for several years. It is a perfect location for sunset dinners and an outstanding dining experience. Again, they did not disappoint. Highlights were perfectly done filet, swordfish and kampachi with garlic fried rice as a side. Wonderful flavors, well balanced, and perfect portions. Starters were corn ribs (a favorite ) and snap peas with goat cheese. Prices are at the higher end, but the value is spot on. We always try and eat here once during our trips to the island.

Our server was quite simply AWOL and the pace of the dinner was awful. Starters came fast and then he forgot to come back to take our dinner order so there was a prolonged wait between courses. On a more amusing note, no one bussed our plates forever but the server did take my empty wine glass away and as he walking away said “we also sell by the glass if you’d like more.” I was like excuse me? I live next door at Mauna Kea resort and I’ve been coming to CH for over 25 years and have eaten there countless times. I even made a point of eating there as often as possible during the pandemic to show support, when Matt and Yuka were running the show, and it was always gracious and delightful. Now the menu prices have skyrocketed and even that’s ok but the past few times I’ve visited the service has been truly horrible. It’s almost like going to the post office. You get the feeling that the staff can’t be fired for any reason because there is a labor shortage on the island and it’s hard to replace servers. But I won’t return. I’ll drive to the Four Seasons or Kona Village instead.

Overall, the experience at the CanoeHouse outside of the service is just not what it used to be. We ate at Merriman's earlier in the week and honestly wished we'd spent our money there a second night vs. going to the CanoeHouse. We felt for the quality, the food was overpriced and steak was very salty. The fish was pretty bland and we were disappointed that there was no ono or mani on the menu. The drinks were also very sub par. Considering the Mai Tai was more expensive than it was at the Ha bar, you would expect a better quality product. That was not the case. Love the Mauna Lani, have been going here for 36 years, but the CanoeHouse has been disappointing since the repoen. We also wish you would play Hawaiian music and not crappy house music. It sucks.
