Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Doug Hewitt

From the OpenTable editors: James Beard Award-nominated restaurateur Sandy Levine is behind this farm-to-table favorite next to the Detroit Institute of Arts. The simple, seasonal menu at this bright green spot changes often, but don’t miss the twice-cooked egg buried in a nest of greens and showered with salty cheese—and a Chartreuse-tinted cocktail, of course.

In a nutshell, we'd definitely go back. The server brought out two small glasses of Moscato on the house for my birthday, which was lovely. I had the perfect glass of sauvignon blanc and my husband had a beer to drink, so I can't comment on their cocktails. Our appetizer, the egg two ways, was excellent (9/10), although we think the yolk was supposed to run slightly based on our server telling us to be careful not to slice into it too quickly and squirt ourselves. It was more of a medium consistency. I had the ratatouille tortelloni, which was okay. I'd give it a 6/10. I ordered it without the prosciutto because I'm a vegetarian, and it's a good thing because it was already very salty without it. It needed something tart to cut the salt. There were tomatoes, but they were too warm/cooked to do the job. If the capers hadn't been fried, it would have been better. Also, it was crunchy, which was strange. The crispy prosciutto would have just added to the already intense crunch factor, which would have been over-the-top. My husband enjoyed his wild boar shank--he said it was a bit more smokey than he was expecting, thus gave it an 8/10. He said the jalapeno grits were his favorite part. We ordered both the vanilla cake and the Madagascan vanilla pudding and split them. It was my birthday, so they put a candle on the cake plate and wrote a birthday message on a piece of chocolate that they propped up against the cake. It was such a nice touch. The cake was good, a touch dry, but with the creme and blueberries, it was barely noticeable. I'd rate it 7/10. The Madagascan vanilla pudding was a 10/10. It was intriguing in the best way. The flavors were unique and delightful. It was louder than we liked, especially since our table was so wide between us--we had to speak fairly loudly to hear each other--and I was seated next to a window, which made it fairly cold, but the ambiance was otherwise very nice, and our service was exceptional. We'd definitely go back.

Our server Grace was fantastic. Was sure to ask about food allergies and provided us with a GF menu. She was quick to refill waters and answer any questions we had about drinks or food. Everything was delicious and fairly priced. Would make this a regular stop if I lived in the area.
