Having spent years supplying London’s top restaurants through their separate wine businesses, Joe Haynes and Benedict Butterworth have joined forces with Tom Hurst, who has worked at Brawn, The Marksman, Levan, and most recently as Head Chef at Lasdun, to launch the trio’s first restaurant together.

Located in a Grade II listed building on Cloth Fair, Cloth Restaurant is part of a historic row of buildings in the City of London that survived the Great Fire of 1666. Down this atmospheric alley opposite St Bartholomew church, Cloth is taking over a double fronted corner site that’s beneath the former home of poet John Betjeman and next door to the two oldest residential buildings in London.

Inside, low ceilings, wood floorboards with antique wall lights and artwork create a cosy, intimate atmosphere, while marble tables, long dark wood banquettes, antique crockery and cutlery will create the feel of a classic bistro.

This was my second visit to Cloth Restaurant, and it was another memorable experience. The food was amazing, with each dish felt both refined and satisfying. The wine was excellent and paired beautifully with the meal, adding a special touch to the evening. The service was attentive and consistently good, enhancing the overall dining experience. The ambience was warm; inviting, and slightly dim. If anything the close proximity of the tables made it a little loud at times, which slightly detracted from the otherwise cosy atmosphere. The evening came to a total of £179, which, while a little on the pricey side, felt justified for the quality of food, wine, and service.

I really wanted to love Cloth, and on paper, I absolutely should have. The ambience is BEAUTIFUL and so cosy. We also really enjoyed the initial first course of small snacky bits. However the main menu was limited and EXPENSIVE for what it was. We had a bowl of pasta and crab for £27 which sadly was deeply unexciting and small. We then had some pork which was nice but not worth £34 without any sides. There was nothing that bad about the food, it was all perfectly edible and pleasant. However I just think there are many many other restaurants in London that are less expensive and better value. Sorry Cloth 🙁

The food was average, but the Negronis were outstanding. Unfortunately, the staff didn’t come across as particularly friendly. Overall, it was an okay experience, though perhaps my high expectations for this restaurant led to some disappointment.

Beautifully cooked fish 5/5 but cold and my guest found a bone so overall 3/5Very off putting and huge embarrassment. Chips nicely seasoned but not all cooked crisp 3/5. Starters were average. Beef tartare 3/5. Cold leeks dreadful bitter and missing ingredients 1/5. Although atmosphere was really romantic and lovely 5/5 and service was good 3-4/5. Overall sadly I shall not be returning. Too many great restaurants in London for this to be considered by the Michelin guide. we ordered early at 6:15pm so kitchen not busy so no excuses. Restaurant was 3/4 full by The time we left just before 8pm.

I don’t usually find the time to write reviews, but I wanted to make sure I documented how totally lovely our experience in Cloth was on Tuesday night. The room and atmosphere was cosy and intimate, the food was comforting and delicious and the staff were incredibly welcoming. Particularly as I snuck in a three week old in a carrier in my chest. It was my partner and I’s 16 year anniversary and we wanted to celebrate but knew we’d have to bring the baby so decided to chance it. The baby was thankfully silent and sleepy for the meal and I don’t think many realised she was even there but the staff made me feel welcome and comfortable even though I know it was not ideal. I will always remember this impeccably warm service and am looking forward to coming back again sans baby very soon. Thank you.

Two of us had the set lunch menu. It was good value although I thought the bavette was a bit tough and the greens which were billed as "creamed" weren't. The wine is generally pretty expensive. I chose at the cheaper end but it was still over £50 a bottle. It was very nice though. No issues with service which was good.
