Having spent years supplying London’s top restaurants through their separate wine businesses, Joe Haynes and Benedict Butterworth have joined forces with Tom Hurst, who has worked at Brawn, The Marksman, Levan, and most recently as Head Chef at Lasdun, to launch the trio’s first restaurant together.

Located in a Grade II listed building on Cloth Fair, Cloth Restaurant is part of a historic row of buildings in the City of London that survived the Great Fire of 1666. Down this atmospheric alley opposite St Bartholomew church, Cloth is taking over a double fronted corner site that’s beneath the former home of poet John Betjeman and next door to the two oldest residential buildings in London.

Inside, low ceilings, wood floorboards with antique wall lights and artwork create a cosy, intimate atmosphere, while marble tables, long dark wood banquettes, antique crockery and cutlery will create the feel of a classic bistro.

A quick lunch. Prix fixe menu was totally uninspiring (cheese and tomato on toast, mushroom risotto and rice pudding - that's right, rice and rice). The tomatoes in the starter tasted of nothing. The risotto was very liquid. The creamed greens were tough. The rice pud was ok. The a la carte may have been a better option but even that lacked any semblance of flair. Service was ok-ish. We'd followed a recommendation - won't make that mistake again. The damage for 2 bordered £100.

Consistently great food and service complemented by a great atmosphere and grand choice of wine. Menu was again refreshingly much changed since we were here a few weeks back and it was fun once again to escape through the back of the wardrobe for a couple of happy hours.

This is really more an exceptional wine bar with good food to accompany. We started with an excellent Pommard 2017 available by the glass and an intriguing 1996 Hermitage (just starting to lose structure but where else can you try this?). Then a 2008 bottle of Latour's third wine Le Pauillac which was a great wine and a very reasonable mark up compared to retail. Finished up with a fascinating red Jura and with dessert an excellent Coteaux du Layon. As for the food, steak tartare was nicely cut and flavoursome, perhaps a tad salty, whilst the pork chop was tasty and well cooked. This is a simple, friendly, unpretentious and very welcome addition to London's restaurant scene.

A real find! Wonderful ambiance - and mercifully music-free, delicious food (the venison pie for two was a highlight, brimming with flavour and very moreish!) and friendly, efficient service. Bravo!
