Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Chef Kristi Brown

From the OpenTable editors: Eater, The New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, and the James Beard Awards have all sung the praises of chef Kristi Brown's Seattle soul cooking at Communion. The pork neck stew is non-negotiable, alongside creative dishes such as "hood sushi," or cornmeal-crusted catfish rolled with pickled veggies and remoulade. That plus the welcoming vibes in the industrial chic space set in the city's historic Black district have made Communion one of the country's best new restaurants in recent years.

The food was amazing. We shared the shrimp toast and Unc’s wings. I had the collard greens and pickled relish plate with hoe cakes…absolutely delish! We shared the mac and cheese. The rest of my party had the neck bone stew and squash dish…they said it was fire. Only issue was we sat outside and the heaters were not very strong….most of us wore layers, but we were shivering the entire time…probably burned off the calories we ate.

Its great to see an upscale restaurant in what was a beat-down part of town in Seattle, the past center of the "hood" The history of the Chef and family is cool, their passion is food and hospitality. The drinks are amazing. The apps are inspired Southern dishes with modern twists. I was abit disappointed with the presentation of one of their signature dishes, the black eye pea hummus. It was disappointingly small portion and more runny than the slick photos on the site. I had made a rez two weeks out and thought i would get a premium table, but we were seated in a hard two top right next to the servers station with constant traffic. The noise level was over the top so don't expect a quiet dinner. Would be great if owners put some noise cancelling tiles over their super cool pressed copper ceiling. We opted to sit at the bar and had excellent service from Allie. I will go back and sit at the bar again for their ambrosia pear vodka cocktail. Cheers

First time visit and the food was not disappointing!!! We ordered multiple items wanting to try as many as we could. They were all fantastic! The bread pudding was the best I’ve ever had. It’s a small place so the seating is odd. We were seated right in front of the kitchen so we got a bird’s eye view of everything going on back there, as well as each plating process. Not necessarily a bad thing IMO b/c I got to see each and every dish. But maybe a *little* too close for others b/c it’s also quite hectic and loud. Cute bar area. Turn offs: the 5% ‘surcharge’ on all bills (this was not, nor will it ever be, ok), and the automatic designation for a 25% tip. If you’re going to charge a ‘surcharge’ - it’s pretty ballsy to then try and pull this off. Not sure if we will be back - but we’re glad we gave it a visit.

It was our first time to Communion. We made a reservation. We were very pleased with the service and ambience. We had a great server that was very helpful with our food selections and the food was delicious! We got the shrimp toast, house salad, clams and pork chop. Everything had so much flavor. I loved the coconut broth and sausage in the clam dish and wish I had a spoon but we used the clam shells to drink the broth haha. I was not expecting the focaccia bread to be so thick, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside like French toast. It was amazing with the bites of shrimp inside the bread. Very cool appetizer! Can’t wait to visit again and try some of the other dishes.
