  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for fine wines
Situated in Sandsend, one of the most picturesque villages and a true hidden gem of the Yorkshire coast, Estbek house is an award winning and critically acclaimed restaurant with rooms. Estbek - often misspelt as ‘Estbeck’ or ‘Eskbeck’ - is a Georgian property, built circa 1750 and previously housing the Alum mining office. We aim to emphasise this incomparable charm of the historic building, with a tasteful touch of modern luxury throughout.

We spent 3.5 hours there. Lovely ambience from start to finish. Head waiter/joint owner has a lovely way about him. The food and wine were excellent. Just a great evening - and good value bearing in mind the courses we had and the time we spent there.

The location is stunning. I know the property is restricted somewhat by layout, however on walking in one is greeted by the chef calling out from the kitchen telling us to go to the bar and pointing the direction. We were greeted warmly in the bar and offered a drink. The lady serving us recommended the crab claws to start and the Mornay for main course. We went with her for starter but had different mains. Bearing in mind the starter was £15, we got 3 claws that had about a bite of meat on each, served on a lettuce leaf and a shredded spring onion with a small dish of dipping sauce. Not a great start. Main course was a lot better, as we chose a piece of fish which was cooked beautifully, yet another oddity though was that most mains were served with the same sides, samphire, peas and a strange lemon mix. Dessert was also odd in that everyone had to have a pick and mix. I am not against mini desserts if you can't make your mind up, but found being told that if I wanted a standard dessert portion, I should order 2 of the same mini dessert! That said, the desserts we chose, bread and butter pudding were good. Service was very attentive and friendly. Would we go back? Probably not - as the price was at the top end but the food was not

We visit Estbek whenever we holiday on the Yorkshire coast. It’s now like visiting old friends and the team treat us in the same way. The building is elegant and the two dining rooms are quite small and intimate but comfortable. Once a guest is seated, the table is not rebooked so the meal is leisurely and not rushed. The food is sublime. The menu is based on fish but there are other choices. We were treated to a very pleasant amuse bouche of tropical smoothie. I started with pan fried scallops which were perfectly cooked. My husband had crab spring rolls which he also loved. We both had the fish pie which is not a sloppy mess under potato! It is a stack of perfectly prepared crayfish, scallops and white fish in a lovely seafood sauce. We usually have the winter menu when this dish is served with vegetables but this time we were able to catch the season for samphire and peas. This was dressed with crystallised lemon which lifted it to heaven! The desserts are a triumph. Homemade mini desserts and ice creams - servings about the size of an espresso cup - meant we could choose a variety between us. I chose creme brulee, toffee Eton Mess and a steamed sponge with home made strawberry jam. He chose chocolate flake ice cream in a brandy snap basket and trifle. All gorgeous as they always are. The food and ambiance are delightful but the stars are the team. Lovely lovely people who really care about what they do and want to share their commitment with their guests. We’ll be back yet again next year.

I rarely make reviews - this is an exception. We booked for a family birthday celebration and from the moment we made the booking David and his team made us feel safe and welcome. We have a number of food allergies and one of our party has significant anxiety about eating out. Communication around our booking and needs was exemplary. On arrival at the restaurant David explained the menu and presented all of the options available with empathy, knowledge and compassion. The food was wonderful, particular mention to the fish pie (more a beautifully cooked and stacked selection of fish and shellfish with the most delightful cream sauce than the traditional fish pie) and the Thai curry. The desserts were superb. We are looking forward to finding a reason to make the 2 hour journey for a return visit. Thank you to all of the team at Estbeck for remarkable service, food and a great evening.

A very generous portion of Halibut, beautifully cooked. My only complaint is the wine list which does not include our favourites and we ended up with one that was far too lemony
