About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Great for outdoor dining
  • Neighbourhood gem
Built in 1927, Fig313 stands today as an original historical landmark of San Clemente, with a history that is meant to be shared with its seaside community. Carefully constructed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, distinctive design features include red-tile roofs, white stucco walls, hand-crafted windows and arches, painted tiles, and open-air courtyards.

Originally owned for the first 33 years by John and Jeanette Riley, 313 El Camino Real was renowned as Riley’s Waffle and Coffee Shop. Legend has it that actor John Wayne frequented the restaurant for a hearty American breakfast along with many travelers from all over the world. From 1960 on, Riley’s Café would change ownership many times, evolving into a furniture store, French restaurant, tequila company, and catering business. In 2012, the current owners purchased the property and began renovations and restoration, while staying true to the integrity of the original style.

I booked a table for on the patio and asked for a quiet location. It was our anniversary and I wanted to be able to have a conversation with my husband. The table was situated in the middle of the patio which was beautiful and had several heaters to ward off the evening chill. In the back of he patio was a party of 4 young women who were heavily into their cocktails and were louder than everyone else on the patio combined. The noise did subside somewhat when their food arrived however. This caused me to notice that the music of choice for this romantic, wisteria trimmed patio was Rap music. I know Rap has its place in the music world, but it seemed to be inconsistent with the ambiance the restaurant owners had designed. The Rap music played the entire time we were there and was annoying. The food was very good, we shared a Caesar salad and enjoyed the fried capers. My husband had an order of meatballs which came smothered in a chunky marinara sauce that was delicious. I had the scallops resting on a bed of black rice (a first for me) and pureed acorn squash. It was delicious. On our reservation, I indicated that it was our anniversary dinner, but there wasn't any mention of it be the host or the waiters. We might try Fig another time, but I don't feel compelled to return.

The menu at Fig313 is thoughtfully curated, offering a blend of seasonal ingredients and inventive flavors. Each dish we tried was meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. Standout items included the fresh seafood appetizer and a perfectly seared steak that was tender and full of flavor. The wine list is extensive, with knowledgeable staff offering great pairing recommendations. Service was impeccable. The staff was attentive without being overbearing, and the pacing of the meal was just right, allowing us to savor each course without feeling rushed.

made a reservation for sat night with my GF. we were sat quickly. they adjusted the outside heater for us. those are the highlights. the food was awful. she had beef borgegnon, i had salmon. her beef was served on bed of mashed potatoes. the filet bits were tough and didn’t taste good. my salmon was severely undercooked despite my order. and finally ran out of coffee. save $200.

Lovely little downtown gem. Love all the fig in the dishes. Main restaurant is small and was a bit loud because of a few big parties.

We had a pleasant experience at Fig 313, thanks to its cozy atmosphere. Parking is limited to street parking or the church lot behind the restaurant. Service was a bit slow. Although we always make reservations and are seated quickly, for some reason, both times we visited, we had to wait quite a while before a server attended to us. This time, we had plans after dinner, so we had to ask for service before we were finally offered water and able to place our order. However, once the food arrived, the server checked on us regularly, which we appreciated. Overall, we would rate the service 3.5/5. The food is quite good, and we particularly enjoyed the Brussels Sprouts, bone marrow, and toasted octopus. The salad was decent, but the salmon and pasta pomodoro were rather average. On a Friday night, the restaurant wasn’t too crowded, allowing us to choose an outdoor seat by the fire pit, which was a nice touch. If the service speed improves, it would make the dining experience even better!
