Ouch - it is sad when you have reasonable expectation and look forward to a night out which you haven't had in some time to come away feeling angry and frustrated. Where do you start. We entered the restaurant and waited for 10 minutes to be welcomed and a further 5 to take coats and be seated. Delay after delay - as other reviews have suggested - don't come here if you are in a hurry. It is overpriced for the service and attention. Food was okay on the choices there were. Ambience was nice and the party of 4 in a booth felt secluded enough which was great. The icing on the cake was when the bill came we were told at 11pm at night that their card machine hadn't been working since lunchtime and could we pay by cash. There is a cashline up on Princess street a 5-10 minute walk away where you can get some! No hint of any reduction in the bill for the delays and further inconvenience just an automatic 10% tip on the bill. This did not feel right and or sit well. We should have been told well in advance of any issues here not when it was time to pay and having to leave the place for 10 - 15 minutes before you come back to pay! The is a first for everything. It is so sad that this is somehere that could be nice with the right staff and committment - its overpriced for the game they are trying tp play though and once again somewhere in an overpriced Edinburgh you would be enbarrased to see tourists experience something similar - having a look at tripadviser - I/we are saddended to see this is clearly not a one off - but they are getting away with it time and time again and people continue to pay!

The restaurant was suffering from a staff shortage so admittedly, the service was not up what you would expect however the staff themselves were lovely and I was happy to tip them above the usual service charge. The food however absolutely compensated. I had the artichoke veloute and the cod for mains. Really really great food created to a very high standard (in comparison to Rhubarb, Gleneagles, Kitchen etc). You won’t be disappointed if you eat here!

I had eaten at Forage and Chatter previously and was excited to be able to get a booking. We arrived and quickly ordered as we were going to a rugby match and had a firm time commitment. After 40 mins, we had received only drinks and bread and were told that our meal would come in 5 minutes. 10 minutes later we were told that our order had only just been put in and there was only one oven and our lunch would be served in 10 minutes. After a little more than an hour we received our meals which we had to eat quickly to make the start of the match. The food was delicious but we didn’t have time to enjoy it properly. Our waitress was very apologetic and deducted the cost of our drinks but it didn’t really make up for the time it took to receive our meal.

Unfortunately other than some sourdough bread we didn’t have an opportunity to taste any food. When we arrived for lunch we advised a member of staff we were going to a rugby match. We decided to skip starters and go straight to the main course. Over an hour after we placed our food order we were told that our mains would be another 10-15 minutes. The waiting staff were all friendly and apologetic and we weren’t charged for our wine but we did leave hungry. It seemed somewhat disorganised and a disappointing experience.

We were there as a part of 6 to celebrate a family birthday and had a wonderful experience. The food was outstanding and the service was great too. The beef tartare, parsnip veloute and smoked salmon were all amazing as starters, as were the sirloin and pork for main course. Everyone was impressed with their meals - thank you for making the occasion special.
