French Roast has been fulfilling the appetites and quenching the thirsts of Upper West Side residents for close to 30 years. The classic Parisian bistro offers a take on French cuisine that compels locals to return and newcomers to stop in. French Roast serves authentic French and American cuisine to all. I had a lovely dinner with out-of-town friends, where each of us ordered a different entree and we all thoroughly enjoyed our food and agreed that it was good value. My only disappointment was I specifically chose the restaurant for the duck confit, and at 6:30 on a Saturday night they were already out of duck (which also meant I couldn't have my second choice, the cassoulet). But given it was my second time and second good meal, I will return (perhaps calling ahead to inquire about the duck situation). I highly recommend French Roast.

When you go into something with high expectations, It's almost never that a restaurant can exceed your already heady hopes. My friend & I wanted to try the "Forgotten Food Festival" that a group of chefs had put together for this spring. We had a Chamber music concert at Lincoln Center (needed to be there at 6:30) so we booked an early table at French Roast for the first day of the Festival. We were pushing our luck, being early on the first day with a time crunch. The staff & Chef made it a singularly splendid experience. Our waitress, Maria Alejandra went to Chef Loi & together they made us feel like royalty. She came out promptly with our appetizer, but the real showstopper was when our main course arrived: Pheasant under glass. It was a beautiful plate of Pheasant on a bed of tender salsify under a beautiful glass dome. The entire wait staff surrounded our table as the plates were uncovered ceremonially as if in a classic movie from days past. The dish was splendid, only outdone by the extraordinary service. Since we were the first "Festival" participants the chef came out & shook our hands. It's very rare to have such a once in a lifetime experience at dinner.

Always great food and the service is impeccable. It can be a bit loud sometimes so if you’re looking for a quieter atmosphere, this may not be your place.

Never disappointing, French Roast has become one of my favorite local restaurants on the UWS. The staff are always friendly and responsive, uniformly trying to make our experience pleasant.

Had a delicious brunch with my son. Ordered challah French toast and my son ordered eggs. Generous portions and well prepared. Comfy place to enjoy meal and catch up. My go to place for brunch and/or lunch.
