The Sri Lankan dinner was fantastic and the customer service was excellent. For Valentine’s Day they gave each table a red rose. Our meal took a while to come out but they gave us complementary papadums and homemade chutney while we waited. Can’t wait to go back and try their lunch and breakfast menu.

Gia is a new Sri Lankan restaurant that runs as a café by day and a Sri Lankan restaurant in the evenings. Friendly but slow and at times inattentive service but this reflects a new and inexperienced team. Roti was not typical but instead a stiff savoury biscuit like food. I loved the mackerel curry and the food presentation but would like to see some child-friendly options and food to arrive faster.

This was our first meal at Gia cafe and the entire experience was seamless. For me as a diagnosed coeliac it was wonderful to learn that nearly every dish is gluten free though it is not stated as such on the menu. The attentive waiter indicated the few dishes that contained gluten which included the naan bread. We ordered the hot butter Hawkesbury calamari entrée to share, then for mains ordered the black pork curry, mushroom curry, samba rice plus the eggplant moju side dish. It was all simply delicious, fresh ingredients full of subtle flavours and as requested not too spicy. We felt completely and happily satiated after the mains and thus gave dessert a miss this time round but left thinking a return visit would be organised in the near future and dessert would be considered in the mix.

This was our first dinner at Gia. We are locals, and we will always try new dining ventures, especially when it specialises in food from the sub-continent. The food was exceptional, especially the mains of chicken curry and pork curry. The serving sizes were spot on. Together those features meant our plates were completely empty on finishing. Gia is licensed and does not accept BYO. We ordered a glass of shiraz and a glass of cab sav - can't remember the labels or vintages. But the shiraz was off and the cab sav not far from being off. We asked for the shiraz to be replaced. This is not something I like to do, but it does happen. It was not an issue. Our waiter said he could not understand the shiraz being off as he had opened it the previous night and had already served others with it. But I did not need to taste it to know it was off. The smell did that, and my taste confirmed it. The replacement glass of shiraz came from a new bottle - chalk and cheese. Much better. Later we were given another, complimentary glass. That was unexpected. Bottom line is that we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and did not let the wine issue spoil it because it was minor and, hopefully, a one-off. Service was attentive, prompt, and friendly and professional. We will be back.
