Chef Owner, Tong Chee Hwee, former Group Executive Head Chef of Hakkasan, has returned to launch Gouqi, an Award-Winning, Fine Dining Chinese restaurant located at 25-34 Cockspur Street, St James's opposite the Canadian Embassy, Trafalgar Square.

The restaurant name derives from the goji berry, a symbol of health and vitality that inspires the ethos of the restaurant. Using premium produce sourced from around the globe, the menu offers an abundance of flavours, techniques, and ingredients. The Berri Bar offers Asian inspired cocktails and an eclectic wine list.

Gouqi seats 100 guests, including 2 private interconnecting dining rooms; Crimson & Ruby, which seat 10 and 12, or combine to accommodate up to 22 guests.

Pre-orders required: Legendary Peking Duck 24hrs, Emperor’s Lobster Soup with Rice Pin Noodle and Crispy Rice 24hrs, Dim Sum Afternoon Tea 24hrs, and Live Norwegian King Crab 72hrs.

Gouqi has two interconnecting private dining rooms; Crimson & Ruby, which seat 12 and 10, and combine to accommodate up to 22 guests. For standing events, the rooms can accommodate up to 45 guests. The minimum spend from Sunday to Thursday is £1,200 per room, Friday and Saturday is £1,500 per room.

The food is absolutely delicious. It’s a shame we went late so a lot of food I wanted to try had sold out. However everything I got was absolutely amazing. The peking duck is one for the books, absolutely one of the best ducks I’ve had.

Overall I wasn't that impressed. Staff on the door did not know what they were doing. Front of house was a confusing mess with people milling around Serving staff were not Chinese and didn't really understand the menu. I was pestered to order fried rice. Fried rice is rarely eaten in China expect as a morning dish to use up leftovers. Many items were not available. Looking into the kitchen it is clear there are one or two senior Chinese staff (and some of the dishes showed the class the duck and peach nectar soup was first rate) but most of the rest of the team is Indian and it shows in little details not being correct. Food was served in the wrong order and without care to seating of the guests. Overpriced and an attempt to get one or two top Chinese staff and then bulk out the the rest of the team with junior Indian staff. It shows. Not worth the money the depth of knowledge and service standard is lacking. Front of house desperately needs improving.

It’s Valentine Day so it’s a bit crowded. The staffs were super busy so we had to wait for a long time for menu. The food are delicious and I love cocktails at Gouqi. Mu Shé and Gouqi no. 2 (I forgot the exact name but it should be the second cocktail on the menu) are super tasty and amazing.

Outstanding service and quality of food, pricey but for sure worth it. Booked a table for two, and was running slightly late as I underestimated the parking distance. Called to let the restaurant know and they were completely fine with it, considering it wasn’t a busy night. We ordered the duck which was 10/10 with Golden Egg fried rice 9/10. We also had Kung Pow Chicken (if that’s how you spell it) 8/10 with a nice wine I can’t remember the name of. The service was excellent, very atentative at our little private booth, when bringing the food over and replacing the water. Definitely going back soon.

The texture of each of the dishes we ordered was good, flavour was a mellower than I expected, in general the dishes were solid. For the price, they did not represent good value or an exhibition of craft that you'd hope for in a fine dining place.

The service was pretty lacking for restaurant of this price range. We got given 3 dishes for 6 as we all ordered the set menu. Then they came after a minute and said we got given one too much and took a dish away, think that was a pretty rude way to handle the situation. Also it took ages to get any water top up and a lot of the waiters try to avoid eye contact when you seek attention.

There is a stylish serenity that hits you as soon as you enter Goqui from a bustling corner of Trafalgar Square. The service is professional, informative and friendly. The food is unbelievably good, with every mouthful is a taste sensation. And although expensive, it is so good that it also deserves 5 stars for value. Thank you
