From the OpenTable editors: This MICHELIN-Starred tasting menu gets special status for sourcing ingredients from Heritage's own farm down the street. The seasonal, multi-course menu includes fruits and vegetables that sibling owners Phillip and Lauren Pretty get from the farm twice weekly. Plus, meat and seafood comes locally from California, including fish from Long Beach’s own waters. You’ll see it all in showstopping dishes like dungeness crab toast with avocado crema and sous vide beets.

My first experience here was to celebrate my wife’s birthday and our expectations were more than fulfilled. Tasting menu was smooth and everyone made it a special night for us. Definitely looking forward to coming back. It’s hard to pinpoint my favorite part of the menu because it was all so amazing. The octopus skewer was a new experience for me but really blew us away.

I have been here several times and each time exceeds the previous. The use of local, in season ingredients is reflected in the amazing flavor of each course. The environment is not stuffy like many fine dining restaurants, with 90s hip hop playing the night we were there. It’s unpretentious and I love it.

$25 valet. And the guy warned me my car will likely be broken into if I don’t valet. Scary neighborhood. The staff is very stiff and sticks to a bizarre script in their customer interaction. Awkward barren decor, complete silence in the restaurant. Was expecting more from the food. Way too expensive for what it is. They deserve to lose their star.

Heritage's multi-course tasting menu includes a few items that don't quite reach the "wow" level but those that do make up for it. The prawn cracker and Dungeness Crab appetizers were stellar as was the creme caviar. The kanpachi crudo, however, was bland as was the hen of the woods dish. The rainbow trout was delectable; the beef rib chop well-marbled, tender and flavorful. The desserts were just. . .ok. Heritage is popular for good reason. The service is professional, warm and friendly. The wine pour was generous. Mid-way through our meal, however, the dining room had filled up and the noise level was quite high which makes conversation difficult (but not impossible!).

The trout is my favorite and the best seafood ever I have tasted. And now, I have a new favorite dessert, too - the Cocoa Craquelin. We will definitely come back.

The dishes were meticulously curated. Specific highlights, ice cream with caviar and chive and the rainbow trout. Heritage’s attention to detail includes sound dampening under the chairs. Highly recommend, will be going back.

Heritage Restaurant, Long Beach – A Well-Earned Michelin Star by Michael Broderick. In a city where “Californian” culinary ambition often plays second fiddle to casual dining, Heritage in Long Beach has carved out a place of quiet excellence, earning a well-deserved Michelin star. This intimate dining experience is a testament to ingredient-driven, technique-forward cooking, where flavors are both restrained, unpretentious, and deeply expressive. From the first bite, it was clear that Heritage excels at layering textures and flavors in unexpected ways. The meal began with an Amuse Bouche trio: a delicate prawn cracker topped with sweet Dungeness crab, a green leaf with another seafood salad that was to be eaten like a mini street taco, and balanced with the brightness and light crunch of pickled turnip. A seemingly simple couple of bites, but one that foreshadowed the precision and thoughtfulness of the courses to follow. To cleanse the palate, a mint tea infused with palo santo was served—a meditative interlude that was both refreshing and aromatic, setting the stage for the evening’s journey. The first official course, Crème Caviar, featured Russian Sturgeon Heritage Caviar and chive, a chilled preparation that was rich yet elegantly restrained. This was followed by Kanpachi Crudo, presented with carrot, ginger, and macédoine vegetables, offering a balance of clean ocean flavors against bright, vegetal undertones. Then came what I consider the star of the evening: a dish that fully captured the ethos of Heritage—Hen of the Woods Mushroom, topped in a “sunchoke stew” (crispy fried sunchoke) with fermented mushroom. For an additional $25, an indulgent shaving of black truffle took the dish to another level, transforming it into a sensory experience that evoked the deep, earthy satisfaction of foraging. The interplay of umami-rich elements made this course a masterpiece of textural and flavor contrast. The proteins that followed were executed with equal care.

Dinner was incredible! We were nervous about it being Valentine’s Day and all but they blew us out of the water! Such a fun experience! It was fine dining without that stuffy feeling and the food was top notch. The only thing I wish was that we were closer to the kitchen so we could watch the action, but we’ll just have to return and sit at the counter for that!

I really wanted to love Heritage. I'm from and have a lot of love and pride in Long Beach. It was pouring when we arrived. We waited outside the restaurant some time before popping my head in to let someone know we were there for our reservations. We were told to wait outside (covered but cold with sideways rain was not ideal). Seating was tiny and crammed in the first dining room. Best seat in the house are at bar in the front of the kitchen, not only for the view but also for the room it afforded you to move within your chair. Otherwise you were seated at maybe a 3x3 tiny table in a corner or very close to another tiny table. It was very poorly ventilated so it got smokey quickly, not ideal for asthmatics. The food was good but not stellar if I'm honest. I've been lucky to eat other Michelin Star restaurants. Details were missing, knives were dull which made it difficult to cut the mushroom dish and crudo (which was served also with a spoon). The servers were kind but maybe overly busy that night. With most Michelin Star restaurants the attention to the guests seems more intentional, not at Heritage that night. The attention to us seemed an after thought. Lastly, my favorite dishes were the mushroom dish, especially with the added black truffle. The steak was perfectly cooked. And we appreciated that we were offered non-alcoholic wine when they noticed we weren't drinking. Maybe we'll come back. Maybe not. Either way much love to Long Beach

Exceptional meal by a Michelin star chef in a beautifully run restaurant. Truly exceptional food. Do it.
