I wanted to love Hook + Line. Sadly, I didn't. Maybe it was that we were there on a Saturday night and it was packed. (I had a friend, a restaurant critic, whose advice to diners was: never eat out on a Saturday night. Often wise advice if it's great food you're after.) Let me start with the good parts. The staff was great! We had a very good waiter, who was clearly informed about the wines, listened to us, and made some good recommendations. Really good focaccia, lightly kissed by the wood-burning oven. A lightly dressed Casear salad with vibrant, fresh romaine. And a side of broccolini that was delicious and nicely done. We weren't so happy with the entrees. For me, skate wing: very fresh and served on the bone (nice touch!), well cooked, but with a gloppy, heavy sauce that, for me, didn't work with the skate. My wife had a lovely piece of halibut that came up cold, and which she sent back 3 times (note: 3 times) to be warmed up. And the volume in room was, well, VERY loud. I ran a SoundPrint check -- 80 db, or, as I noted, VERY loud. Oy.

Really poor experience. We were sat for dinner at a table (4 people) next to the bathroom, on the bar side of the restaurant and couldn't hear ourselves speak the entire night. There were two tables on that side of the bar, and despite the restaurant knowing that they were expecting a large, loud party at the bar, they still sat us there even though they had other tables available on the quieter side of the restaurant. The food was truly awful - the stuffed clams tasted like sludge with a bit of clam pieces mixed in, the burrata was drenched in beet sauce and basically tasted like beet soup, and the salmon (3 orders) was severely undercooked. We didn't even bother asking for it to be cooked more given how long it took for us to actually get the food/drinks, and the overall poor atmosphere of being sat essentially in the middle of a bar. Truly a 1 star experience - I had read seen some of the poor reviews beforehand but figured maybe they were just one-off bad experiences...sadly not the case, this place is just bad and wildly overprices given the poor food quality.

foods excellent - under staffed - loved the tuna appetizer and fish and chips. My companion had the stuffies and salmon with a side of grilled broccolini - all wonderful.

We ordered appetizers and four different entrees. Every one of them was not good. Tuna was overcooked, swordfish undercooked, branzini soaked in sauce and rubbery. Drinks were a mixed bag. Service was annoying. red flag was many empty tables on friday night. Oh, and it was stupid expensive! Super disappointing.

Put it this way… the highlight was that our water glass was never empty. Other than that, the experience wasn’t great. At one point, we went 45 minutes with no visit from our server, (the restaurant was busy, but still!) which meant empty wine glasses and no food. The entrees left something to be desired with the fish on the plate, sauced in a similar way even though they were supposed to be different, and no side accompaniments to be found. In my opinion, this restaurant was not worth the money spent.

Service was SLOW. Some food came out cold and mine came out dry on a scalding plate having sat under heat lamp too long. Waiter was super forgetful. They obviously overeat the restaurant and the kitchen couldn’t keep up. We didn’t get much of what we asked for in a timely manner. Clam chowder was pretty good. Everything else was either horrible or just meh. Left hungry and feeling ripped off. Super noisy too. Manager comped part of our meal, but it was still not worth what we paid. Never again.
