Located on Charleston's Upper King Street, Indaco (Italian for "indigo") serves rustic Italian cuisine. Wood-fired pizzas, hand-crafted pastas, housemade salami and cured sausages fill the restaurant's menu which can be enjoyed family-style or a la carte. With community tables, an open kitchen, and a comfortable atmosphere, Indaco can accommodate 100 guests for a casual night of food and drinks. The wine list is focused on affordable Italian varietals, the Negroni cocktail is on tap, and the fresh sodas are made in-house. The massive wooden doors on Upper King Street are your first indication that Indaco is different from the typical Charleston restaurant. Rustic details continue inside with butcherblock tables, lime-wash walls, and white brick. An open kitchen with nearby community tables lets interested diners keep an eye on the action inside the kitchen. Outside, a patio puts you streetside to watch Upper King Street's vibrant nightlife scene.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Within the prolific Indigo Road Hospitality Group, Indaco is the rustic Italian institution. Restaurateur Steve Palmer, a James Beard semifinalist, opened the original in Charleston in 2013, and it’s grown to four locations across the South. The secret to success? Woodfired margherita pizza, fresh tagliatelle with an egg yolk nestled on top, and house negronis on tap, all served in a rugged space with butcher block tables and white washed brick.

I have dietary restrictions and they were extremely accommodating. The food was absolutely amazing. We got the ricotta on gluten-free flat bread to share and then for my main dish, I got the gluten-free Bolognese to die for. Our server was absolutely amazing.

Great experience and food. We shared the calamari for an appetizer and ordered the swordfish as well as the agnolotti. Would definitely go back!

We enjoyed one of the best overall dining experiences in a long time. We were referred to Indaco by our granddaughter and she was so correct. Server Bruce and GM Maureen made it a terrific night.

The new challenger for the Charleston Italian restaurant scene. Incredible welcome that was warm and genuine. Tyler is one of Charleston's best. We were quickly seated. The restaurant is rich with warm colors and decor with real candles. Artful photos of pasta making makes you want to order immediately. We started with well crafted cocktails and a bottle of Pinot Grigio (only one choice) and a Super Tuscan. The wines were a little on the expensive side especially for this birthday party of 20 something's. The Hugo cocktail was called out as especially well crafted while the espresso martini was overwhelmed with coffee tones. The service was amazing and attentive. The server team worked together to deliver orders. The appetizers were exceptional including focaccia with whipped ricotta and apple butter - sizable chunk of bread that was delightful. Polpette that are top 3...in Charleston with a fresh red sauce - simply wonderful. Burrata with fresh greens and two slices of bread (needs more) was excellent. For dinner, the pasta dishes were finely crafted and had incredible flavors. Just really fresh crafted pasta. At this point, I was so excited to eat and lost track of my write up. Chicken parm was very good but needed more sauce and was a little dry. Not to take away from other pastas! We had pizzas for the table including the fig pizza. Sometimes less is more with pizza. Too much Gorgonzola that over powered, but nice arrugala and prosciutto. Top cooked more than bottom. I'm a pizza fanatic.... It was awesome. I want to get it to extraordinary!!! So good!!! Profiteroles were rich and delicious capping off an incredible dinner.

We enjoyed the warmth of the atmosphere with the brick walls and the decor. My husband really enjoyed his supreme pizza which was cooked in a woodfired oven. I had a gluten-free pizza which was fine, but I would not need to go back for another one. Our friends had Chicken Parmesan and a salad. They said it was good. She’s a good cook and prefers her own recipe. They have other friends who enjoy this recipe restaurant and are return customers.

Food and drinks were delish! Our server recommended the meatballs as a starter and they were fabulous. Everything homemade…best meal of our three nights of dining in Charleston.. Only wish I could remember servers name because he was awesome and deserves praise!

Cannot say enough great things about the “for the table” experience we had tonight at Indaco. We were celebrating three birthdays and it was the perfect meal. Each course was unbelievable. The waiter was beyond kind and accommodating and the same with the hostess. Thank you!!
