I love L’Oca D’Oro. But our experience last night was very disappointing. I’ll assume this was an off night, but I’ll wait to go back until it’s warm enough to sit outside where it’s quieter.

Exceptional food and service. Tasting menu was awesome. The pasta and meatball and fresh mozzarella were exceptional. The tortellini was also amazing. Our service was perfect. Will return.

I booked this restaurant for Valentine’s Day and did so on the merits of it appearing on lists of best pasta in Austin and most romantic restaurants in Austin. Truthfully, I prefer to pass on negative reviews, however, given that my experience was so poor on such an important holiday I feel the need to give feedback. Three days prior to my visit I was called solely to be asked for my credit card information. When I asked for an online pathway to doing this, not wanting to divulge my card information during a phone call in public, I was told that was not possible. They said they would need to call later, something they would never do which caused confusion for me as to whether my reservation, made two weeks prior, would be honored. When I arrived with my lovely date, whom I still had an excellent time with, it was to a crowded entryway where we were told that they were “running behind” and our reservation time was unlikely to be honored. We were given a rushed apology and nothing to supplement the wait. This wait would last nearly an hour and while we sought respite at the bar we were told by a bartender that we should revisit to get a better experience on a night that isn’t so busy. When we finally sat, the theme of rushed service was made a standard as we neither had the preset menu, wine list or cocktail selection explained to us. In regards to the menu it left much to be desired and included confusing juxtapositions like Indian samosas and Italian pasta. Plating was drab and the atmosphere was soured by diners pensively waiting to be sat for what they hoped would be a romantic dinner. I want to make it clear that the food industry is grueling and each and every worker deserves respect. However, if you are going to demand nearly $300 for a meal, something that is very reasonable in the right setting, you simply cannot offer such a disappointing experience. It became clear that the restaurant was over booked and failed miserably on such an important occasion.

The pre-fix Valentine's Day vegetarian meal left a bit to be desired for the price, though several of the items were incredible (pasta, samosas, turnips), and the Beatles theme was fun. They probably could have done with one more front line person at the bar on such a busy night. Everyone that works there that we interacted with was very friendly, knowledgeable and lovely, however. I want to go back when the a la carte menu is available. I appreciate that the restaurant takes such good care of their staff. Overall, a good experience.

Christin, Thanks so much for coming to celebrate with us and providing some feedback. We're thrilled that you enjoyed the Beatles menu. Look forward to having you back in for our regular menu. There's always a number of vegetarian dishes and pasta is 1/2 off during Happy Hour every day from 4-6. See you again soon, Adam Orman, Co-Owner

We loved the dinner - the Valentine’s Day special was incredible, drinks were amazing and the service was great. Only downside was they seemed to be running behind with reservation times - we had a 7:30 reservation and got sat to eat at 8:10. Overall the dinner and drinks were great!

We came for the Valentine’s Day set menu. Cocktails were very good, ambience was nice and our server was very friendly and attentive! We were looking forward to this for a while but sadly we did not care for most of the food. First course- the mozzarella and garlic with beet puree was a big miss. The mozzarella was not very soft and we couldn’t taste any of the beet topping, as the garlic was overpowering. Not a great mouth feel w/ this one either, just cold mush. The kale salad was overwhelmingly salty, but the nut clusters were really good! Sadly the entire dish just tasted like a salted lime. Finally, the focaccia bread with blueberry butter. I was really looking forward to this one but it was just not good. The butter needed salt desperately, the entire thing was just bland. Second course- masala samosa. This was fine, was interesting to see this as a course at an Italian restaurant. It was good, could have been warmer. My issue with this was that it tasted like a samosa you could get at tarka or something similar, nothing stood out. The next dish, the butter poached turnips, was the one I was the most curious about. My partner and I liked this dish the least. I thought this tasted identical to microwaveable steam-in-bag broccoli. My partner thought the dish was so bitter that they only took one bite. Last dish was the bucatini a la vodka. This was DELICIOUS but cold by the time we got to it since they bring every dish of the course out at once. I wish there were more pasta dishes on this menu because this is clearly a strong suit of theirs. Dessert- olive oil cake with zabaglione. Cake itself was very tasty! Zabaglione was awful and ruined the whole thing. I know it’s made with fortified wine but it was so overpowering. Every bite was like I was taking a shot of cheap liquor. We ended up scraping most of the sauce off. Overall we were so disappointed with the food quality, especially with it ending up costing $225. We both agreed we wouldn’t come back.

Gabriel, I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy the dinner and that we didn't know while you were in the restaurant so we could try and make sure that your dishes were being prepared properly. We don't have as much flexibility as usual on nights when we're doing a set menu but we still want to bring you hot food or olive oil cake without zabaglione if that's what you want. Maybe you'll give us another try during Happy Hour when pasta and spritzes are all 1/2 off from 4-6 everyday. Take care and thank you for the feedback, Adam Orman, Co-Owner

Excellent night! We've attended many of the Valentine dinners and this was one of the very best. Good vibe, fun theme and really excellent menu. Well done! And glad you spread it out over a few days.

Food is on the salty side. Credit card fee is added automatically. Tip of 20% is also added automatically, which should be based on service quality, not automatically deserved. Obviously if the service were great, I would not bring this up.
    L'Oca d'OroResponded 5 days ago
Kacy, Thanks for coming in and taking the time to review. Anytime something is too salty, please let us know so we can remake the dish or test it for salt. We're always happy to bring back something else for any reason. As to the service charge, we've included that since we opened so that it can be shared with the entire staff and guarantee a living base wage, PTO and direct primary care benefit so they don't have to depend on tips for the majority of their wage. That said, it is still our job to provide excellent, friendly and approachable service. If there was something specific that was not good about the service, we'd love to know. Take care, Adam Orman, Co-Owner

We enjoyed our meal of grilled Romaine salad, (pricey) lasagne, and tiramisu. Wish the seating were more cozy. Attentive service. Built-in 20% gratuity.

Margaret, Glad you enjoyed and thank you for taking the time to review. We appreciate it and hope that you'll come back and try a different part of the restaurant next time. Maybe, the patio during the next few months when it's nice? Let us know that you'd like a nice corner or banquette or try the Chef's Counter which might not be cozy but is a fun show. Hope to see you again soon, Adam Orman, Co-Owner
