Mamakas Taverna is an elegant 85-seat Greek taverna on Ossington Ave. Owner Thanos Tripi brings a fresh, authentic approach to Aegean food, offering classical Greek dishes against a contemporary canvas. Each plate is thoughtfully crafted to evoke the way Thanos’ grandmother cooked, inviting guests to explore the Greece he grew up with through food, art and music.

Meant to mimic an open market, the room is built of white concrete blocks creating an effect similar to the stucco seen throughout Greece. Mamakas is a nod to heritage, history and family memories – the daily trip to the market for ripe and fragrant tomatoes. Visiting a trusted butcher for fresh paithakia, and the local fish monger for the daily catch.

    I booked the table for my boyfriend’s birthday. Food was amazing, nice plating and presentation. We ordered the eggplant dip with grilled pita, meatballs, the grilled octopus, the lamb shank with sides of roasted potatoes and asparagus. We had also had a few drinks with dinner as well as coffees and a piece of the stunning baklava cheesecake for dessert! Great for an occasion or a date night!

    Generously big portions! Really tasty, especially our salad. Ate inside in the main area, great space, good music, too. Restaurant went out of their way for my mother for her birthday, and the milk & honey ice cream was very good.

    Mamakas never fails! It was a wonderful evening with friends and the food was amazing as always. Service was great. Just a little loud for conversation but everything else made up for that. I tried some new dishes and they were superb. The souvlaki excellent and the greek yogurt pana cotte desert was amazing. When in doubt head for Mamakas!

    This was the BEST meal I’ve had in a looong time. Our server was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu. We had the Elias, tirokafteri, spanakopita, kolokithosalata, oktapodi, laimos arniou and loukoumades me karydia. Everything was delicious but the lamb was outstanding!

    We loved this restaurant. There was great energy in the room, the food was delicious and our waitress was exceptional. The pita with Taramoslata was exquisite; the sable fish was superb, grilled perfectly; and the triple cooked potatoes were yummy! We were visiting from Vancouver, and we will definitely return when we come back to Toronto.
