Partners Matt Kelly and Josh “Skinny” DeCarolis are proud to offer Mothers & Sons, a trattoria in downtown Durham featuring regional Italian food with seasonal sensibility. DeCarolis introduces the first restaurant in the South to focus on fatta a mano —handmade pasta.
Mothers and Sons offers antipasti dishes such seasonal bruschettas or smoked octopus. Choose from primi dishes like the bucatini al amatriciana, squid ink tonnarelli or rigatoni alla norma and secondi dishes like the bistecca alla floretina and eggplant parmigiana. Dishes are made with seasonal ingredients so menus may change depending on when you visit. An extensive Italian wine list, dozens of amari as well as an imaginative cocktail list with an italian flair assures there will be a drink that will complement your meal perfectly.

Celebrate Graduation and Mother's Day with Mother's & Son's! We will be offering a specially curated three-course fixed menu, created by Chef Josh Decarolis. Enhance your meal with our optional wine pairings, expertly selected to complement each course. Please note that our usual a la carte menu will not be available during this weekend. The menu will be released by mid April, and we will be able to accommodate a wide variety of dietary needs.

They charged for refills of their fountain sodas, we thought that was ridiculous. Manager just stood in the back, didn’t greet or check any customers and there were only 3 other couples dining. Food was mediocre. The potatoes that came with my husbands meal were cold. Tomato sauce in the appetizer was biter. We will not be returning.

Artichoke salad and chicken were good, but the eggplant Parmesan did not taste fresh, and was disappointing. We will not be back.

The food and service was outstanding! Lasagna was the best I’ve ever had, and I’ve been to Italy at least 10 times! Cacio Pepe was perfect! Can’t say enough about the food. Definitely a ten out of ten!

The food is amazing as always. I crave the Burrata with pesto, the ciabatta, focaccia, whipped ricotta, tagliatelle ragu, alllllll the desserts and honestly everything else, I can’t name everything. And they have great cocktails, ciders and they have such great service. It’s always a treat. <3

It’s been a couple of years since we last ate here. Came tonight to celebrate a birthday. They had a small “ Happy Birthday” sign sitting on the table and the server acknowledged several times the special occasion. She was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable of the menu items. The food was delicious but not as good as previous visits. The Crispy Octopus was way too crispy which took away from the flavor of it. It was very crunchy and a bit too salty. The Squid Ink Tonnarelli, was just as good as we remembered it. It was lukewarm though. So that was a little disappointing. For dessert we ordered the Budino which used to be sooo good. They must have changed the recipe because it was different. They added a layer of cream then something crunchy as a topping that was way too sweet and took away from the chocolate. All in all, it was good but not as good as it used to be….

Our entree dish, porchetta, was prett uneven. The outer skin wasn't crispy and parts were over cooked. Also, the potatoes came out cold but the server did a great job correcting that issue. The worst part was my seat. My head was two feet away from a flatware drawer that was constantly being rummaged through by staff and the constant noise was quite unpleasant and distracting.
