Nami Kaze Hawaii is the story of Chef Jason Peel’s culinary journey. Executive chef: Jason Peel

From the OpenTable editors: Chef Jason Peel is known nationally as the former executive chef for Roy’s Waikiki and beloved locally as a cooking instructor at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific. He opened his own restaurant Nami Kaze in 2022, quickly scoring a couple of James Beard Award nominations for izakaya-style small plates, both hot and cold, that star ingredients from favorite local farmers and fishermen. We enjoyed the ahi tartare, green bean, and hamachi . The service was excellent. The only thing we didn’t like was being cramped into a small space with several other guests in a side room. The table next to us was so close that I could hear their conversation even though they were speaking at normal volume. Oh well. The food was great so we would go again.

Would have given an overall 5 star but it was disappointing to have our second round of dishes brought to our table and there was no space to set those dishes since the empty dishes brought for our first round had not been cleared. The server had to be assisted by the customers to clear the table Another minor concern was a party of 8 was extremely loud in the small room we were seated.

It’s so wonderful to go back to this great place! We’ve been here once before (last year) and since coming back to the island, this was one of our scheduled stops. Wonderful atmosphere and people are very friendly and pleasant.

Made reservations at the sushi counter on a Thursday night. Perfect food, service and vibes. Everyone is working well together and very hard. The food was amazing.

The island hopper cocktail is delicious. I look forward to future seasonal dishes Limited gluten free options but they do exist. My husband wanted to order the salmon but it was not available. He went with the kanpachi instead. He said the grilled grape was a flavor he had never had before. He enjoyed it. The fish was perfectly cooked. The portion size was just right. The okra pieces were flavorful but tiny (perfectly sized for the dish). It was so good, he finished off everything. The ponzu butter was on point. I almost thought he was going to drink it. Thank you for the surprise birthday sorbet. The hamachi crudo was my favorite dish of the night. Next up was the scallops with basil pesto risotto. Park in the gravel parking lot to the left before reaching the restaurant.
