    Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, introduced afternoon Tea in England in year 1840. Lunch had become a “skimpier” meal, so of course, the Duchess would become very hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon, far from when dinner was served around 8 o’ clock in the evening. The Duchess found taking an afternoon snack to be such perfect refreshment that she soon began inviting her friends to join her. She found a light meal of tea (usually Darjeeling) and cakes or sandwiches was the perfect balance. There are no rules to the spread of food, but the standard for Afternoon Tea comprises a layer of sandwiches, a layer of cakes and a layer of scones or tea cakes.

    Food was unique and delicious. Chose to eat in atrium. It was a little loud but a nice atmosphere. History of building & book store was a bonus. Looking forward to returning.

    My husband and I tried this restaurant for the first time and were happily surprised. The atmosphere is fantastic and unique. It's a little loud in the dining area, but not enough that you can't talk to the person directly across from you. The food was amazing, as well as their tea collection. The staff are fantastic and treat you very well. The manager was terrific regarding a mistake over my meal. Overall, a must-see. We will be returning soon.

    The menu is very limited for gluten free items . It would be great to offer corn tortillas like most restaurants. It’s a beautiful restaurant and great service, but they really need to expand their menu.

    Our server Niko was amazing and he was able to speak Spanish to my mother-in-law was super helpful. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is it seemed like Niko maybe had too many tables assigned to him. He appeared to be working really hard but service was a little slow than normal. That said, I would love to have him as my waiter in the future. Molly at the Champaign Bar was wonderful as well.

    Very neat concept with the bookstore AND the gift store. Lots of unique items in the gift store, and signed editions in the bookstore. Ambience would probably be better on a weekday or early in the day on a Saturday/Sunday. It was very loud, and busy. They were also out of mocha syrup which is in most of the "chocolate" drinks. We did get to choose to sit in a half booth BUT the greenhouse would have probably been nicer. Again, it was very busy on a Saturday around 12:30 pm. If you're not bothered by noise and crowds, then you would enjoy it more than we did. Our food was great. I recommend the deviled eggs, cinnamon roll, avocado toast and eggs Benedict. For drinks, since an iced mocha was out of the question, we had mimosas and Bellinis. All were excellent. Side note: We actually had reservations more than a few weeks in advance and were not seated in the greenhouse. I do recommend booking reservations and putting in the "notes" to place you in the greenhouse if available. Otherwise, you will get seated wherever there is room if they are swamped.
