Park Tavern on Washington Square has long been a vibrant staple and foundation of the North Beach community. Now, under the helm of renowned American chef-partner Jonathan Waxman and fifth-generation San Franciscan James Nicholas, Park Tavern on Washington Square celebrates San Francisco’s vibrant dining scene with a fresh new era. The restaurant has several private dining options available for groups and parties.

As a Bay Area native and one of the pioneers of “California cuisine” Chef Waxman leans into his roots, celebrating the region’s local ingredients showcased in simple, seasonal dishes. Guests can enjoy a menu including Yellowfin Tuna Crudo with avocado, blood oranges, and fresno chili salsa, Cavatelli with dungeness crab, lemon, and parmesan, and Kurobuta Pork Chop Milanese with new potatoes and pepperonata. A few of Waxman’s trademark dishes make an appearance including the JW Kale Salad with anchovy dressing and breadcrumbs, and the famed JW Chicken with salsa verde.

Sadly super underwhelmed by the "updated" Park Tavern. The food used to be much better, I had always loved it. They are missing signature dishes that made it so great, like the crispy brussel sprout chips. The dishes we had - salmon, taglietelle, burger - were just average. Nothing special. The kale salad was the only standout. The hamachi crudo was mushy. The service was really disappointing. The host was awesome, but our server seemed annoyed to be serving us. I won't be back.

Come back to the re-opened Tavern on Washington Square! We had a wonderful meal at the chef's counter. We ordered the tuna crudo, a large portion with citrus & slices of avocado in a zingy vinaigrette. We also started with the signature kale salad - pleasantly parmesan-forward with crispy crouton crumbles on top. The waitress suggested the shrimp scampi pasta, which amazed us. It did not have a typical tomato-garlic sauce. Instead, the perfectly cooked shrimp were sauteed with garlic and thinly sliced fresh peppers with an undercurrent of peppery heat. We shared the King salmon main, which was served on a bed of fresh spinach and watermelon radishes in a vinaigrette, making it a sizeable but light presentation. The portions were on the medium+ side and were very sharable for at least two people. All the food was excellent. The wines by the glass and the cocktail we had were also great. They are still looking to get fully staffed, but we felt well taken care of. The team there is very professional and attentive to their customers. We will be back!

Brunch menu was limited and they were out of 2 of the main items (no burger, no Eggs…) at 1pm. It was largely empty and I’m hoping this is just a slow restart for a formerly epic sf establishment.

Sadly this new iteration doesn’t have the magic of the old Park Tavern. It felt empty like a Westin hotel restaurant. The polenta and shrimp were great but the frittata was overcooked and they inexplicably were out of the burger at only 12:30pm on a brunch Sunday. I wanted to love this place. Maybe for drinks outside on a sunny day because I love the park, but otherwise it’s not worth the expensive prices.

Overall it was a really nice experience. Service was really warm and timing was great. Red pepper pancakes were the highlight and most of the other food was solid but nothing special. Only disappointment of the night was the crab pasta. No flavor at all, barely any traces of crab. The manager handled it really well and graciously removed it from our check. We’d come back for pancakes and the chicken.

Kale salad off the charts, perfect. Good cocktails. Filet was ok, sides were confusing. Would have been better with mashed potatoes for texture vs. slightly burnt scalloped pie. Would recommend some kind of ceiling or floor cover to help with noise. Very kind, helpful staff.
