About this restaurant

  • Great for creative cocktails
  • Neighbourhood gem
  • Innovative
Paya is an exuberant, island-inspired restaurant and bar located on Miami’s South Beach founded by Mohamed “Mo” Alkassar and Chef Niven Patel, the duo behind FEAL Hospitality. It is a platform for Chef Niven Patel to pay homage to the insular cuisines of the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and Spain’s islands, where he and Mo have either worked or visited extensively. Chef Niven’s dishes incorporate ingredients he grows at Rancho Patel, complemented by vibrant wines and tropical, farm to glass cocktails.

The restaurant features 56 dining room seats, 25 bar seats, and 8 raw bar seats, with a gorgeous display of fresh seafood. Expect to jam to some Manu Chao style music while basking in the vibrant island vibes and flavors. South Beach has been home to Mo since he moved to Miami in 2016, and Paya is his thank-you to the community that supported him through his journey.

Paya is a South Beach neighborhood gem. The lamb shank curry was incredible: the meat fell off the bone, the curry did not overwhelm the taste of the lamb but instead complimented it. The polenta, Brussel sprouts and spinach were all well prepared and were nice compliments to the lamb. I was so impressed with the food on my first visit that I had to go back two days later to sample another entree. I tried the Lemongrass glazed daily catch which was Snapper, and it was also very tasty. The coconut curry was barely noticeable so as not to overwhelm the fish flavor. The bok choy was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed both experiences

We had a spectacular meal at Paya. The service was attentive and warm, and the food was fabulous in both technique and flavor. I only wish we lived in town; we'd return again and again.

I live around the corner from Playa, and we’ve been meaning to try their happy hour menu for a while, having enjoyed a full dinner there prior after they opened. Although my companion arrived before me, he was fine sitting at the bar. However, when I arrived and asked to sit at a table, Vicki, the hostess, said we could not sit at a table and had to sit at the bar for all happy hour items. I pointed out Paya's website specifically states that oysters must be eaten at the bar for happy hour, however, it does not indicate that you must eat at the bar for any of the other appetizers. When I asked to be seated at a table, because I twisted my neck and I did not want to be turning my neck while talking, Vicky, the hostess, said she would have to check with management. While she seemed to acknowledge that she heard me, she came back a little later and said we could not sit at a table, even though the restaurant was 3/4 empty. On a positive note, the food was tasty, and Annamarie at the bar was warm, friendly, and welcoming. However, most restaurants would have accommodated a reasonable request – especially since I had twisted my neck – even though it was technically against their rules – rules which are not stated in any way upfront for food. Unfortunately, while the food was good and Paya is down the street, the experience leaves a very sour taste in my mouth – so I don’t think we’ll be returning anytime soon.

We tried the tasting menu. Very lovely presentations, especially flavorful and perfect portions. The ceviche in the first course was fantastic. Desserts were outstanding! We would recommend this restaurant and would love to dine there again.
