The menu follows a Southern-fried meat-and-three concept, meaning diners order a meat, plus three sides. Those will include Ruthie’s mac and cheese, of course, but also white-soy-braised greens, stewed chickpeas and smoked cauliflower with a spicy soy glaze. “We’re going to be changing it a lot based on seasonality,” Hill says of the menu. “ Every vegetable has got to be fantastic because it has to stand on its own.” One thing that will help that: Hill is already growing all of the restaurant’s own herbs at his South Arlington community garden plot.

                  We woke up with a hankering for brunch, and, knowing Ruthie's can get crowded on the weekends, we checked to see if we could nab a reservation on line. Hurrah! Glad we did so, as there were several people when we arrived who had to wait for hours or try for a space at the bar. The breakfast did not dissapoint: we love the apple pancakes that aren't sweet or cloying but full of apple flavor. And they had a special pit beef & egg breakfast sandwich that was perfectly conceived and executed -- right down to the fresno chili on top and side salad with fennel to help cut the richness. Washed down with an excellent flat white. It was a great reminder of why we keep Ruthie's in the rotation.

                  We took advantage of the "All-Day" nature of Ruthie's and had an early lunch before taking a friend to the airport. The restaurant was already bustling with patrons at 11 AM, and the kitchen was offering a very popular lamb burger in addition to the extensive regular menu. Whether it's breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, Ruthie's All-Day has something for everyone - and specials - that keep us coming back!
