‘Great British food in a striking riverside mill’

A true hidden gem, Sculthorpe Mill is a breath taking pub buried in the heart of the glorious Norfolk countryside built atop the River Wensum. Originally a watermill dating back to 1757, it has been lovingly restored by sisters Siobhan and Caitriona Peyton and they have created a haven for foodies and pub lovers alike, as well as one of the best pub gardens in Norfolk. This is a stunning contemporary dining pub, complete with chic bedrooms and a menu of expertly crafted modern British dishes.

Sculthorpe Mill’s seasonal menu changes regularly to make the most of Norfolk’s bountiful produce and all our core ingredients are locally sourced, foraged from land and sea before being passionately turned into award-winning dishes.

Come spring and summer, our garden is the ideal pace to enjoy an evening meal alfresco, or even just a crisp glass of rosé as you listen to the rush of the river or the buzzing of bees in the flower garden.

Our family’s recent visits to Sculthorpe Mill have quickly made it a favourite destination for special occasions, so much so that we returned for Father’s Day with my wife, son, and his girlfriend. The setting by the river is picturesque, offering a tranquil backdrop that makes any meal feel like an occasion in itself. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service—while sometimes a touch leisurely—is always friendly and attentive. For the meat and fish eaters in our group, the menu delivered beautifully. Dishes like the rump steak and sea trout were all praised for their freshness, quality, and skillful preparation. The ingredients are clearly sourced with care, and the kitchen does justice to local produce and proteins. Sculthorpe Mill’s approach to meat and fish is robust and satisfying, with plates that balance classic comfort and a touch of refinement. As a vegetarian, however, my experience was more mixed. While I appreciate the effort to feature seasonal vegetables and legumes, my main dish felt somewhat one-dimensional: a generous helping of peas and beans with a small amount of chopped spaghetti. The ingredients themselves were fresh and well-cooked, but the overall composition lacked the variety and complexity I’d hoped for. The dish was dominated by the legumes, which, though wholesome, overwhelmed the plate and left little room for contrasting textures or more nuanced flavours. A more balanced vegetarian option—perhaps drawing on the creativity evident in the meat and fish dishes—would significantly elevate the experience. Even a simpler preparation with greater attention to seasoning and complementary elements would be welcome. Sculthorpe Mill remains a delightful spot for a family meal, especially for those who enjoy meat and fish. The setting, service, and quality of ingredients are consistently strong. For vegetarians, there’s room for the kitchen to bring the same creativity and balance to their dishes as they do to the rest of the menu.

Beautiful setting, great staff. Very busy and there was an issue with the one dish but they handled the situation really well.

Pork Ribeye was 'melt in the mouth' outstanding, full of flavour. Always enjoy the atmosphere here and have been a number of times. Just a shame about the weather as the outside space is great! Seriously, try the pork!

We had a very friendly hard working waitress. Unfortunately, either the waitress or the barman mistook an order for a non-alcoholic beer called “Pine trail “ for another, alcoholic beer called PIN TAIL . This would have been disastrous had we not suspected it was alcoholic, as I am not able to drink alcohol at all because of medication. It was a genuine mistake and apologies were of course accepted. Food was good but not exceptional ( main courses pork and stone bass ). We will come back as we do like Sculthorpe Mill very much especially in the Summer.
