State of Grace is a coastal, South Texas neighborhood restaurant in the refurbished Lamar-River Oaks Shopping Center. Elegant but casual, its elevated comfort food by executive chef Bobby Matos is executed at the highest level in a welcoming, beautiful space. The jubilant medley of old favorites played with new spice, accent, and freshness lends itself to southern, American, Latin, Gulf Coast, German and Asian influences. Chef-owner Ford Fry’s first venture outside of Atlanta, State of Grace is located in the neighborhood where Ford grew up and nods to his childhood memories fused with Houston’s evolution into a melting pot of cultures and cuisines.

We settled for our normal Sunday brunch at SOG. We ordered the crab beignets and devil eggs for starters. They were awesome! The crab beignets we hot and balanced and seasoned with flavor, and touch powdered sugar! The devil eggs were tasteful, with a heavy hint of mustard, but fresh creamy. Then we had the griddle cakes! Superb fluffy and the cane syrup was light and sweet but not sugary! Finally the lobster roll and steak frites.. both of these entrees failed! The steak was chewy and no seasoned, but the fries were good. The lobster was fresh but roll was was hard and the salad appeared to just be lettuce tossed in a bowl! I recommend a visit, but you must be mindful about your choices, not every menu item is prepared equally.

Our service was phenomenal, but unfortunately, the food was not memorable. Something about the flavor was slightly off, but the cocktails were also great.

Such a great experience. Food was great. Service was exceptional and they even gave us free crab beignets because the food took a little longer than usual to arrive. But, we didn't even notice that the food was taking a little while to arrive because we were enjoying the restaurant and our cinnamon roll and wine that we had ordered first.

Our server was attentive and pleasant. Brunch was delicious and lived up to the rumors. Service from start to finish was exceptional! The space is gorgeous. It looks even more stunning during the day! We’d only been for dinner service We ordered brewed coffee and requested the milk/ cream be steamed and our server remembered. We ordered hamachi crudo, eggs benedict, Le pharmacy burger with frites. Get the AIOLO!! I was too full for pancakes but I shall return JUST for pancakes. :)

I ordered a white fish, but it was swimming in butter—same with the crab appetizer we got. We also asked if the eggplant side was breaded, and the server said yes and that it was spicy. So we said, “Okay, bring the mushrooms instead,” but he brought the eggplant anyway. It felt like he wasn’t really paying attention to our order. For the price of the dinner, I don’t think I’ll be coming back. This was our second visit. On the positive side, the bread was delicious, and the person at the front was very friendly. They even gave us a free cookie, which was a really nice touch

State of Grace was recommended by a friend that loves all of the chef's restaurants. Every aspect of our dining experience was top notch. The entrance is shut off from the restaurant so you don't have a breeze coming through or street noise filtering into the dining room. While the décor wasn't my personal style, it was so beautifully done that I couldn't help but admire it. No detail was left behind, but it was far from overboard. Even the portfolio the bill came in was thoughtful. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable, not just on their menu, but on the wines offered. She made an excellent recommendation that worked for the wine and non-wine fans, she provided detail on the menu and was overall just an absolute delight. From the freshly chopped salad to the crab cake beignets to my filet mignon. The flavor of the filet mignon was incredible, the crispy eggplant had a little zip and the fries - the FRIES! If you check my bio, you will see that I know my fries. When the server told us how they were prepared, we HAD to get them. Absolutely everything was on point. With the price point, I would have to limit my visits to special occasions, but I will tell you it was worth the money.
