   Sushi Shin came highly recommended to us by a chef from The Shota, our favorite omakase restaurant. While the food at Sushi Shin was pretty good, it didn’t live up to the attention to detail and level of service expected for $275pp. I usually enjoy a Sapporo or Asahi to accompany a sushi meal. Sushi Shin only offered the non-alcohol version of Asahi beer, not preferred but I selected it anyway. After some shuffling around, I was told that it was out of stock. Being the first and only seating of the day, I was pretty surprised that they hadn’t restock their beverages. I understand if they ran out of a rare sake, but a common beer available at any local Asian grocer? The only other beers they had on the menu were pilsners, which I don’t enjoy pairing with sushi, so I opted to just stick with tea. A slight disappointment, but not a huge deal. Several times throughout the meal, we were given hot towels for our hands—a common practice which we are accustomed to. However when my wife picked up her 2nd towel, the steam that came out as it unraveled slightly burned her hand. No big deal, but she let out a “ouch!” Chef Jason quickly reprimanded the server telling her to warn customers that the towels are hot. As the next towels were passed out, we paid close attention as the same server didn’t say anything to the customers. It was only when she put the towel down for my wife that she said “Its hot!” To be honest it was a little funny, albeit slightly embarrassing. The most unsettling detail that stood out to us the entire night came between servings of nigiri. When the server came by to clean off everyone’s sushi plate, she used the same palm-sized tissue over and over again, flipping sides each time as if it was somehow clean again. Granted most people barely touch their sushi plates, but still I think it is unacceptable to clean reused food surfaces in this manner, especially in front of each patron. Overall the experience was okay, but we hoped for better.

   It’s one of the best sushi in Bay Area. Even in Tokyo, it is very good. Chef Jason loves his art.

   Overall just a lot of like cooking mistakes in my experience - dry/hard Shari for some pieces, neta that was messed up/cut and trimmed poorly, and over + undercooked appetizers. More subjectively I also had issues with the seasoning of some pieces as well - some were too salty or had a dashi that was too strongly flavored while others didn’t have enough salt. I’ve been here a few times before and I know it’s not usually this bad, but this was a pretty big miss for me on a criteria that I think is fairly objective. I think with so many quality alternatives at this price point, it’s hard to justify coming here.

   For sashimi lover, this is not your place. Only sushi were served. The most annoying things are the chef and assistants used bare hands to prepare and serve sushi and all other food. They use one napkin / wipe to clean all people’s plates between courses.

   Love the food and the service and everything. The only issue is the customers next to us are so loud that affect our experience. Overall really love this restaurant. Highly recommend.

   Memorable meal from start to finish. Very creative dishes prepared with acute attention to quality, taste and aesthetics. A special occasion restaurant, but still very relaxed and friendly. Fun to watch the chef preparing dishes, admiring his knife skills. We are so fortunate to have this level of quality in the South Bay.

   A few truly spectacular pieces, a few misses though nothing bad, would give 5/5 still but the prices are just way too high.
