Serving fresh, bold and innovative food that reflects the history of New Bedford and celebrates the New Bedford fishermen, their catch and their culture.

Our menu focuses on local fishermen’s catch of the day, old school seafood favorites and a sprinkling of modern seafood interpretations. Menu ranges from raw bar, to warm and cold lobster rolls, baked cod, bacon wrapped scallops, bouillabaisse and grilled NY Strip.

Large bar and spectacular views of the artful New Bedford Fishing Fleet. Large covered and heated deck overlooking the fishing boats and harbor. Centrally located beside the Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Ferries. Large parking lot.

And, of course, the hospitality is second to none. Service is what built the business.

We ordered the Portuguese style littlenecks casino for $17 and received 4 very small little neck shells (no clam) with mostly flavored bread crumbs and a very very all amount of tiny bits of minced clams not a littleneck which is what clams casino should be. This was outrageously priced for what we received. People should be aware of this before ordering. The bread crumb flavor was good but no clam taste whatsoever! We are frequent patrons here and had never ordered this from the menu and to say we were dissatisfied is an understatement.

I’ve never had an issue here except for this afternoon I requested a sm stable near the bar area which is where I have sat for the past 5 or so yrs. I reserved a table and requested the same sm table near the bar area and was told upon arrival there wasn’t one available and that all of the sm tables had just been seated. My question is if the reservation was read properly why wouldn’t one of the sm tables be available. I did not recognize the host and hostess so they must be new which might explain the inconvenience. Not a big deal just an FYI

We had a wonderful NYE dinner. The food was delicious and my steak was cooked to perfection. The covered “patio” was beautiful and inviting, and our server, Mick, was attentive without being overbearing. I’ll make The Black Whale a regular stop when visiting New Bedford.

I go to the black whale a lot and I'm always very happy but on NYE they couldn't handle the volume. My sushi was horrible I actually couldn't eat it, they did take it off the bill, my aunt's food wasn't what she ordered but she ate it anyway.

We loved celebrating NYE at the Black Whale! Our waitress, Naira, was excellent and even made us some hot chocolate in to go cups so we could take them up the street to watch the fireworks. We’ve always loved the Black Whale and tonight did not disappoint 🍾

It was New Years eve, reception was friendly, service great, ambience ok until ambulance flashing lights in windows was worrisome. Unfortunately the food was drenched with sauce, overcooked and disappointing but have been there on quiet days when all was great!

Consistency is key, and Black Whale delivers! Smoke blue fish pate to start sets the tone for us! Delicious! Swordfish, sushi and fish & chips were great.
