I have an intolerance to onion and chilli (not an allergy), which was shared with the member of staff at the entrance and again to the table server. After looking at the menu, I placed my order along with other members of my party (3 of us). A little while later the server returned with someone else, I’m assuming it was a manager. They told me I couldn’t order the food I chosen (calamari and festive burger) because there is chilli in all fryers in the restaurant and the chef was refusing to cook it for me. When I asked if it was fresh chilli and fresh/raw onion (which is my intolerance), they said no but they would not be able to serve me anything from the fryer. I was given the menu and told to choose something else. When I asked what on the menu I could order I was told to choose and they would check. I chose dauphinoise potatoes and asked for king prawns without chilli. The server returned and said I couldn’t have the prawns as they already had chilli and I couldn’t have the potatoes because they were already mixed with chilli. None of these ingredients were listed in the menu. I asked again if I could be told what I could order and they said it was up to the chef. That the chef was refusing to cook items that may risk my allergy. I insisted it was intolerance and in the end asked to see the chef. A young chef appeared at the table. He said he had to be careful and that the business treated all tolerances and allergies the same. After a long conversation about my intolerances to fresh and raw ingredients, the chef agreed to cook the original items I had ordered.
At this point, I had had enough. Not only had I had to complain and explain my intolerance to onions and chilli to 3 members of staff but I had to fight hard to be allowed to order the food I wanted to eat. It was embarrassing and I felt ashamed of my intolerances. Never have I been made to feel such an inconvenience to a restaurant in York as much as i did tonight. I will not be returning.

We are saddened to learn you will not return as we feel every effort was made to accommodate your intolerance & we sincerely apologise for your disappointment.
