Situated in the idyllic Hampshire village of Chawton, The Greyfriar at Chawton faces the home of Jane Austen. However, this award winning pub-restaurant has far more to recommend it than simply an interesting location – a relaxed, warm atmosphere and great food among its positives. The quintessential British pub, The Greyfriar is full of olde worlde character, from wood beamed ceilings to brick fireplaces and horse brass hung bar, not to mention the wonderful South facing garden, a must for traditional English summer drinking and dining. It’s all too easy here to spend time dreaming away over a pint or two, as guests have done since time immemorial. A newer addition to The Greyfriar that simply must be sampled is a cracking menu filled with contemporary dishes using seasonal and locally sourced food, as well as all your favourite pub grub style dishes.

Slow service despite the restaurant being half empty on a Saturday evening (warning sign!) I think the menu is limited and astronomically priced - some main courses at £30, we are not in London! Food was at best mediocre and at worst tasteless and bland. Staff seemed clueless. Best part was the wine. We complained and they reduced the bill but I’m not tempted to return. Such a shame. They have lost the plot currently.

It’s a great place with great food though my husband was disappointed that the hot wings had left the menu! Bit slow on service but it was the bank holiday.

Lovely pub. The food selection was limited because of problems in the kitchen. However the two members of staff worked their socks off to try and remedy things. Especially the young man running the table service

We enjoyed our dinner on Monday evening. We have eaten here a few times, and always enjoy the food and service. Menu was slightly limited by a stove issue, but there was still plenty to choose from in the comfort menu, including for a vegan who went for 2 smaller plates, both of which she enjoyed. Looking forward to coming back soon

Mother’s Day lunch . Really delicious Sunday lunch. Friendly staff and buzzy, cosy pub. Dog friendly. Most delicious lemon sole with fried capers.. didn’t want to stop eating it. Outstanding all around. Will be back.

Young staff was very friendly and helped get a taxi number on a Sunday. Sunday lamb roast dish was one of the best I’ve had-well done staff

Lovely pub but suspect we hit them on a bad day. The service was very slow both in terms of our order being taken and then arrival of food. Even when the pub was quieter, it felt like staff had forgotten about us. Real shame

We were made to feel very welcome and service was excellent. The vegetarian option we chose was not quite as we expected but thta was our fault. Beautifully prepared.
