The White Horse & Griffin has developed a reputation for great food served in a relaxed and unfussy style, using locally sourced ingredients. With an emphasis on fresh seafood, we pride ourselves on great service and value for money. Built in 1681 and with a history you can almost taste, you can dine in the very room where Captain Cook and William Scoresby used to raise and fix their crews!
The upstairs restaurant offers private dining and is ideal for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries or just getting groups of friends together.
Downstairs, our busy ‘bistro style’ restaurant serves many British classics in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
To accompany your meal we have a well-stocked wine cellar, many of which are available by the glass.

This was not the first time we have eaten at the White Horse & Griffin, and it won’t be the last. Excellent food and service.

Wife’s meal was great. I ordered a steak 10oz sirloin, only about 2oz was edible, just 8oz of fat served with over cooked fries and under cooked onion rings

We had a cosy meal for two in the very atmospheric venue . All aspects were first class from staff to food to atmosphere. Portions a little overwhelming but excellent in every way. Thank you.

Unfriendly and disinterested bar staff. Only one server who was polite and attentive. Food was good. Ambience nice, but again spoilt by one or two of the front of house staff. Shame as the place itself is lovely. Won’t be returning.

Very disappointing! There was obviously friction between staff members & would appear to lack leadership. Not what I would have expected having eat here on several occasions. I was asked what the occasion for my visit when booking (which was my birthday) no reference to the event was made, I have to ask why have this question on the booking, if the restaurant doesn't bother to act on it? In a few words (could do better)! Has been a great place to visit, but my experience is it's going down hill.

Amazing food served with a side order of a sour-puss maitre d’. Recommend she should be washing pots as a customer-facing role is not her forte. But worth putting up with as the food was fantastic!
