About this restaurant

Thip Khao is acclaimed chef Seng Luangrath's flagship restaurant in Columbia Heights, Washington, DC. Thip Khao serves up spicy Lao (or Laotian) dishes and classic cocktails with an exotic twist. Lao cuisine leverages tropical herbs and cooking techniques of Southeast Asia. However, the flavor profile is distinct from its fellow SE Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Dishes like Naem Khao (Crispy Rice Salad), Sai Oua (lemongrass pork sausage), Laab, and Tam Muk Houng (Lao papaya salad) at Thip Khao showcase the unique flavors of Laos. Many dishes are served with sticky rice. Chef Seng recommends eating sticky rice with your hands as most Laotians do. Since its opening, the restaurant has been well received by Washingtonians and critics alike. The restaurant has had national recognition from multiple publications including New York Times, Washington Post, Bon Apetit magazine, Washingtonian magazine, and Michelin Guide (Bib Gourmand).

This is a very unique restaurant that could do with a few extra staff members. The ambiance itself is mixed - the vines on the lamps are great, but less effective tacked onto a wonderful painting. There’s a great aesthetic vision here that I think could be fully executed with the boost they must be getting with all their awards. The restaurant feels very local and you can tell with the love put into each dish, but the issue here is that the menu needs some explanation and guests need more time with each server. The staff member at the desk had to frequently run to assist in flipping tables, managing a queue of waiting guests and tables. Our waiter was clearly stretched thin, and did not have enough time to explain important things such as how large each dish would be or how many dishes most people get. By hiring more people, I think each waiter would have a little bit more time with each guest, creating a much better experience. Something I found shocking was that, while the restaurant was still quite packed, there was a last call for drinks… after people had already been seated! It is clear that more hiring needs to be done in order to properly extend the hours of the restaurant, or else hours ought to be shortened to accommodate guests wishing to have a full dinner without the feel that you are being pushed out of the restaurant. The meal itself was nice, though we expected stronger flavors. The Senh Mee Puh was SPECTACULAR and vinegary, as was a special Garlic Chive Cake. We liked our Laab, though we wished for more spice, and the salmon Moak was bland and a little slimy. We ended our meal with Ya Dawng, which were medicinal-style neat moonshine pours that I’d never heard of before - and they were eye-popping! I’d definitely recommend ending your meal with these. This is a really nice neighborhood find, and the pricing is spectacular, but the understaffed feeling keeps me from wanting to go back again until the issue is fixed.

Fantastic and authentic cooking. Delicious ingredients. If you are looking for southeast asian soul food, this is a superb option. Server was friendly and helpful. Small gripe: Turn the music fown a couple notches -- folks are coming here to spend quality time with each other, not do the dance club circuit.
