Umaya, where East meets West in a plethora of Japanese inspired small & large dishes. We focus on drawing from the simplicity of flavor in fresh ingredients, while giving it a Western flair. Specializing on the popular Japanese ‘street food’ - think small 'tapas' style dishes that are easy to share amongst friends & family. Our Izakaya grill features a one of a kind charcoal brick that is imported from Japan & allows for the natural flavors of the proteins & vegetables to radiate.

Umaya elevates the typical 'beer garden' concept with hard-to-find Asian dishes. Our menu promotes friends, coworkers, family to enjoy their time together. We carry a wide array of Asian beer, sake & Japanese Whiskey, complimenting the tranquility of the restaurant. The menu will feature seasonal highlights; however, the time-honored staples will always be available. ‘Umaya’ directly translates to a ‘place that tastes good’ in Japanese; it is a place where you can go

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Umaya offers a delightful Japanese dining experience with "phenomenal sushi" and "superb" specialty rolls like the hamachi tataki. Known for its friendly staff and "awesome friendly service," it's a great spot for sushi and ramen lovers. While ambiance may vary, the extensive menu and "amazing miso" make it a must-visit.

We were seated quickly but then abandoned. 10 minutes passed with no contact from wait staff. I complained to the hostess, but still no service after another five minutes. Left and went elsewhere. Restaurant was only 1/2 full. Won’t be coming back.

When we got to the restaurant, we were seated quickly, and they got our drinks out. It took a little longer than expected to place our order. The food came out at a decent time, but the prices definitely higher than the should be. The prices were too high and didn’t reflect the value of the food properly. Portions didn’t add up to the prices either. Our waitress disappeared for roughly 30-40 minutes and another server had to bring a to go box and our bill. It was a let down and we were excited to come here. I would most likely not come back the next time I’m in town.

Food was truly delicious, and service was very helpful and friendly. Cocktails are pricier than most in DC, and room lighting was too bright, but overall I still really loved it!

Food and variety were excellent. Good beverage choices. Service was attentive and helpful. Ambient noise level was high making conversation a bit difficult. Nonetheless this is a great place for a “non-intimate” get together. I would come back again on my next visit to DC
